This Sunday Q***r Joy is a group show of varying mediums that serves to elevate artists of the LGBTQIA+ community. Lately, it’s been easy to feel weighed down by the inhumane treatment of the q***r community. The weight of this is often so heavy that the simple act of expressing joy as a q***r person can be ...

curated by: Jaclyn Mednicov
materials: Hand-dyed fabric, fabric, paint
dimensions: 26 x 34 inches
location: 5615 N. Glenwood Ave Chicago, IL 60640

This is the first piece I completed after going back to the studio in early June. There’s definitely a relationship to a window in the composition--a looking out or a looking in, either literally or figuratively--what we’ve all been tasked with doing over these past four months. Turns out the piece is exactly the width of Jaclyn’s window. Even more exciting to me is the fact that dyed fabric matches the color of the tiling under the window.

"During the COVID-19 crisis and quarantine, windows have been the one of the only sources ofshowcasing art due to galleries being closed. This window project plays off window materials, using window screen as a template to latch hook and stitch yarn into."

During the COVID-19 crisis in the first months of 2020, communities all over the world have experienced extended times of isolation and social distancing became the norm. With our daily routine significantly changing, many of us had to adapt to a new pace of life. In this unprecedented situation, we share the feeling that time has slowed down. It is becoming harder and harder to keep track of the days passing.

HELLO NEIGHBOR - Give me the name of an artist (Giorgio De Chirico) 07/28/2020

Hello Neighbor: blog post #28
title: Give me the name of an artist. (Giorgio De Chirico)
artist: Sean Gall
curated by: Camilla Boemio with AAC Platform
materials: paper.
dimensions: 55x40 cm / 21.5x16 in
location: Roma - Italy

Sean Gall's “Give Me the Name of an Artist” series is an ongoing project that is sociological research into the perception of what constitutes an “artist”. A wide range of people with varying knowledge of art or art history have been invited to participate.”

Gall asks people to give him the name of an artist they first think of. Giorgio De Chirico was given by artist Giancarlo Savino.

Living in Rome for the artist means to assimilate the culture of the nation; in this relationship with
Savino and De Chirico, there is a majestic baggage of the history of art. Giancarlo Savino was the protagonist of the theory of open studies. His art reflects on society and the sentiment of contemporary time through works that are characterized by the strong expression of the human presence. Giorgio de Chirico with his Metaphysical Painting and its mysterious squares have laid the foundations for Surrealism. A sort of introduction of intellectual binding that art built. Gall added Che Bello since we all need more beauty in these difficult times.

Hello Neighbor: blog post #27
title: Black Lives > Artspeakartist: Meghan Moe Beitiksmaterials: Black wrap, Chalk, Electrical Tapedimensions: Two windows 31" x 29" location: Gainesville, FL

Two windows read "Relationally Fundamental Aesthetics" and "Socially Literate Practice" in chalk. As day fades to night, so do these words, replaced by the phrase "Black Lives Matter," in the form of light shaped by black wrap.

Black Lives Matter. Any work that concerns itself with relationships needs to consider its impact on the lives of people of color. International Art English is often centrally concerned with contextualizing itself within or against canons of art: these words are rendered meaningless in a context where white supremacy dictates the terms.

Hello Neighbor: blog post #26
title: Stay Home
artist: Naomi Elson
materials: Fabric and yarn (handmade face masks)
dimensions: Full window coverage
location: Chicago, IL

During quarantine I made over 50 face masks as a means of necessity and way to explore another means of wearable art. Some of them reflect aspects of COVID-19, through wording stitched into the face masks. The most prominent mask in the center reads, “Stay Home”, encouraging everyone to stay home if they can to prevent the spreading of COVID-19.

Hello Neighbor: blog post #25
title: The Tree #28 (Chicago), V61
artist: Glenn Wexler
materials: Photographic print on vinyl media with chrome overlay, applied to exterior windows
dimensions: 20" wide x 120" high
location: Zolla-Lieberman Gallery, 325 W. Huron St. Chicago, IL
duration: June 1 – October 3, 2020

As part of Hello Neighbor, I created a window installation titled The Tree #28, V61. This work features a photograph of a Chicago landscape repeated and stacked six times; appearing in the center of each composition is the same image of a bare tree. Placed over each photograph, surrounding the tree, is a silver outline made from a converted drawing and placed separately as a thin chrome application. The reflective outline shows us the tree in full maturity as a reminder of what is lost and at the same time, of what could be. This work depicts isolation, vulnerability, and a place where people are facing social distress and life is confronting its survival. The message in this work is not just about urban decay and environmental implications; it's also a discussion about the human condition, the possibilities of transformation, and finding optimism and strength in the face of tragedy.

HELLO NEIGHBOR - The wooden goose 07/10/2020

Hello Neighbor: blog post #24
title: The wooden goose
artist: Maria Elisa D’Andrea
curated by: Camilla Boemio with AAC Platform
materials: window, wooden goose.
dimensions: 140 x 80 cm
location: via Venezuela, Udine - Italy

The wooden goose is the first gift from my kids. They bought it in a small country fair. The man
who made it has written on it “W la mamma” with a black marker, but day by day the writing has
disappeared.

Now the goose is not a banal wooden goose, but it is something loaded by relevance, because of the sincerity and purity of two little children: they just wanted to give something.

That’s why this goose became a sort of home protector.

This is the reason why I thought to the Greek goddess Estia, the guardian of fire and fireplace. Estia
was also the guardian of images, and she was one of the few goddesses without image.

So this is another votive practice, another prayer. Because there is life where there is fire, and there
is fire where there is someone who guards it, someone who feeds the fire creating relevance in
everyday things.

Hello Neighbor: blog post #23
title: Untitled
artist: Richard Alvin Gessert
materials: 2020 Chinese-style tear-off daily calendar slips
dimension: 61” x 72”
location: Hyde Park, Chicago

This ongoing installation consists of daily calendar slips since the Illinois shelter-in-place order went into effect. The Chinese-style calendar was purchased from a local Asian immigrant-owned supermarket. This decision was made in solidarity with the Asian communities facing xenophobia as a result of the pandemic. With this display, the artist questions a simplistic tally of the crisis and its impact.

HELLO NEIGHBOR - A Model of Unsubsiding Intricacies 07/08/2020

Hello Neighbor: blog post #22

artist: Julia M. Koreman
materials: Finished ash wood
dimensions: 28 x 20 x 6 1/2"
location: 2517 W. Lunt Ave., Chicago, IL 60645

A Model of Unsubsiding Intricacies is a small, wooden sculpture that is suspended in a second story window in a brick, two-flat apartment building stairwell. It is lit underneath with a clamp light and only visible after sunset. The sculpture itself is made of thin strips of ash wood that form a linear structure. This work studies the evolution of the utilitarian as cross beams are transformed into intricate, decorative features.

A model of Unsubsiding Intricacies is a study for a larger, seven-feet-tall kinetic sculpture that is being built during quarantine.

marking the absent fresh body—a unit and a package. Enlarged for a street audience, the window frames a monotype fragment, revealing a partial record of an absence.” — Joshi Radin

HELLO NEIGHBOR - Sedentary Scene 07/06/2020

Hello Neighbor: blog post #20

title: Sedentary Scene
artists: Isabella Maroon and Spencer Cheek
materials: ceramic
dimensions: variable (installation in 24"x16"x8" shelf space)
location: Birmingham, MI
artwork submitted: May 17, 2020

We curated this scene with objects from our practice with the theme of sitting in mind. As movement dwindles during this crisis, we wanted to take the opportunity to contextualize how we feel about the decrease in physical activity. Objects in the display are either made for sitting (the two chairs), sitting on something (the plate on its legs and the cup resting on the small dish), and/or domestic items (the cup on the lower shelf).

The installation represents our feelings about confinement. How are we affected by this proliferation of inactivity?
