In true Diana fashion, so we know it’s coming from the heart. “My why is ' why not?'. Pimping is hard, but someone has to do it. 🤣🤣Why not help others find their own voice? Why not help others become better?”
One change Diana wants to make in the world is to “ bring common sense and humanity back to this planet.“

“ I find it most rewarding when my clients can come to their own conclusions about things based on the work we’ve done. I love when they have those little epiphanies. They bring me so much joy. I first got into therapy because I wanted to pay it forward. A lot of people helped me to become the person I am today. I wanted to be that for someone else. The biggest change I want to see in the world is the dismantling of white supremacy. White supremacy permeates so many aspects of our lives, and I want to see all of us get free.”

Sable specializes in Black mental health, women issues, anxiety, self-esteem, healthy relationships, and trauma.
“ I find helping clients understand themselves better (to be) the most rewarding. I believe that gaining a better understanding of self is one of the most important steps in self-compassion. I do this work because I am passionate about mental health. I believe that taking good care of one's mental health is the foundation needed to make joy and success sustainable.
Sable had a few words of wisdom that we could all live by:
“ In life, sh*t happens and all we can do to prepare is arm ourselves with healthy coping skills and a supportive village of caring people to help us weather the storms.
“ One change I would like to make in the world is getting rid of the "one size fits all" idea of happiness and success, and encourage people to create their own joy, rather than looking to society for answers on what it is supposed to look like. “

Ashley, specializes in an array of different issues, including, but not limited to, relationship issues, EMDR, LGBTQIA+ issues, parenting, and trauma-informed care.

Ashley had a lot of ‘whys’ behind the work that she does. But the one that stood out to us the most was as follows:
“ Growing up on the Westside of Chicago in underserved or never served communities (made me realize that) when I had the opportunity, I would give back to communities that looked like mine and people that looked like me. Black clients are more likely to get misdiagnosed than their nonblack counterparts. This is incredibly important because an accurate diagnosis provides the best foundation for treatment of the client. If someone is diagnosed incorrectly, they don’t stand the best chances of (receiving appropriate treatment).”
Because many changes in our current world are needed, it was hard for Ashley to home in on just one. “ But we can start with these damn student loans or better opportunities for Black People, such as mental health resources, more Black therapists, and erasing the MH stigma.”
Now those are some causes that we can all get behind.

The reward for Katie when working with clients is when “ there are even the littlest breakthroughs or patterns or habits that change (with my clients).

The why behind the work that Katie does is that “ I was always destined to be a (s*x) therapist. In high school, people would constantly ask me questions (about s*xuality). I guess it was because I was more open to talking about (s*xuality).”
When asked about the one change Katie wants to see in the world, she said “ there are so many changes I want in this world. I guess the biggest change I’d want is to stop hate.”

The reward for Dawnielle when she works with clients is “ my clients begin to notice change within themselves and how therapy has influenced their change. Knowing I had positive impact on their healing process is rewarding.”
Dawnielle’s why behind the work that she does ” is because it’s my passion. Being a therapist is second nature, and I genuinely love what I do! I am passionate about helping others overcome struggles that sometimes seem impossible.”
The change that Dawnielle would want to make in the world is to change the need of student loans (to) earn college degrees. “I would change the cost of college and allow individuals to attend college for free at the expense of the federal government. Student loans have affected many individuals in a negative way, and has placed them further in debt.”

With Women’s History Month upon us, JL Family services is taking the time to honor the women at our practice who are actively striving towards making a difference in our communities, and nationwide. Since the first Women’s History Month in 1987, we honor the sacrifices women in the US made to help make our world a more inclusive place. Women, who have always been pioneers in the mental health community, often do not get the recognition that they deserve. We want to challenge that notion.
