🌟 Celebrating Carter Janik Day! 🌟

Good afternoon Chicopee!

We are thrilled to share these heartwarming photos from yesterday's extraordinary celebration honoring Carter Janik, our very own gold medalist at the National SkillsUSA Competition! 🥇

Carter's outstanding graphic design work not only brought him the gold but also garnered well-deserved recognition from our community and state leaders. State Representative Shirley Arriaga and the House of Representatives presented him with a citation, while the City of Chicopee proudly proclaimed this day as "Carter Janik Day." 🎉

The outpouring of love and support for this young talent was truly heartwarming. Joining us in this momentous occasion were some of our esteemed leaders, including Superintendent Dr. Marcus Ware, Principal Andrew Lamothe, Carl L. Ingram, Director of Career & Technical Education, Student Advisor Trish Kemp, Scott Bruback, James Wozniak, and Dr. Demers. We were also honored to have City Treasurer Marie Laflamme, City Councilor Mary Beth Costello, Councilor Elect Abigail Arriaga, school committee Grace Schofield and, of course, Carter's family and friends by his side.

Carter Janik, you make Chicopee incredibly proud! Your achievements stand as a testament to the exceptional educators and the unwavering support available at Chicopee schools. 📚🏆

Yesterday, December 7, 2023, will forever be known as Carter Janik Day in Chicopee! 🗓️

Carter, your dedication, talent, and perseverance have set a new standard of excellence, not just for yourself, but for our entire school and city. We can't wait to see where your remarkable journey takes you next! 🌟

🇺🇸 Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day – 81 Years Later 🇺🇸

Today, we pause to remember a pivotal moment in our history and to honor a son of Chicopee, Joseph A. Gosselin, who was among the first to make the ultimate sacrifice on that fateful day.

At 7:55 a.m. on December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor, a symbol of American naval strength, was tragically attacked. Nearly 200 Japanese planes launched a surprise assault on the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, extending over two harrowing hours. This day marked a profound loss for the United States, with 2,403 Americans killed, including our own Joseph A. Gosselin, and 1,178 wounded. Our military also suffered significant material damage: 188 aircraft destroyed and 19 Navy ships sunk or damaged.

But today is not just about remembering the losses. It's about honoring the indomitable spirit of America. Just months after the attack, the U.S. responded with daring and resolve. Under Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle, 16 Army Air Corp B-25 bombers took off from the USS Hornet in April 1942 for a historic raid on mainland Japan. By June, the same Pacific Fleet, thought to be crippled, triumphantly defeated the Japanese Navy in the Battle of Midway. These events turned the tide in the Pacific, showcasing American resilience and strategic brilliance.

🚢 Battle of Midway - Flags of Valor 🚢

As we remember Pearl Harbor, we also honor the unyielding courage of our sailors, soldiers, airmen, and Marines. From the chaos of Pearl Harbor to the victories in Tokyo and the Battle of Midway, their bravery wrote a story of hope and perseverance.

📜 Pearl Harbor Survivor Poem 📜

In memory, we highlight Rear Admiral Paul Howell, a brave survivor of the attack while serving on the USS Neosho, later sunk at the Battle of the Coral Sea. His wife Evelyn Howell's prayer resonates with us today, reminding us of the sacrifices made for our freedom:

"Dear Lord,
Help us to do our best to make each day an excellent day. Many of our country's servicemen lost their tomorrows for our sakes.
May we, with your help, make our todays count.
Thank you, Amen."

Today, as we honor all who were lost, we hold a special place in our hearts for Joseph A. Gosselin, whose bravery and sacrifice as Chicopee's son and one of the first servicemen lost in World War II, will forever be remembered.

On this Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, let's pledge to honor their sacrifices by living our lives with gratitude and purpose, remembering those who lost their tomorrows for our todays.
