🌎 SPH is excited to announce that MIAEH is transitioning to the Department of Global, Environmental, and Occupational Health (GEOH)! The department will include a new global health major and a new undergrad specialization in environmental justice.
“By launching GEOH, the UMD School of Public Health will better support our current faculty, expand our pool of topnotch new faculty and offer students new research and training opportunities to help local and global communities and ultimately improve lives,” SPH Dean Lushniak.
The first of its kind in Maryland, the GH major will introduce new courses and study abroad options. The EJ specialization, in collaboration with , will provide students with tools to work at the intersection of social justice, policy, environmental science, environmental health & public health.

Thank you to everyone that attended our screening 🎥 of the Invisible Corps documentary! Students and guests enjoyed popcorn 🍿 as they watched this film about the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
The film features Dean Boris D. Lushniak, a member of the uniformed service branch for 27 years. Afterwards, a panel discussion was held with past and present members of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. Students were also able to network with members, faculty, the documentary's director/crew and fellow students.
The US has one of the highest maternal mortality rates of any high-income country. These rates are especially high among Black & Hispanic women. A recent CNBC article featuring Associate Professor Marie Thoma explores these disparities.
The U.S. has high maternal mortality rates — and it has gotten worse for Latinas Nonprofits, health insurers and large employers such as Walmart are investing in support programs to try to reduce financial and emotional costs for Latinas.
Associate Professor Kate McPhaul and Assistant Professor Kristen Coleman were just featured in a news article about MD's increase in COVID-19 cases and decrease in testing and preventative measures.
