2024 Spring Commencement: Bill Boyle ’81 and Wendy Sanhai, MBA ’09 | Smith School New Smith School graduates heard keynote speakers highlight technology’s potential for positive change and shared wisdom on leading a fulfilling life. The ceremony honored 2,074 graduates, emphasizing resilience, the importance of truth, and the power of mentorship and service.
"I want to say on behalf of every parent, teacher and administrator, this group showed the resilience and the keep-going forward determination that will carry through many of life’s journeys," said Bill Boyle '81.
Boyle celebrated the Smith School of Business undergraduate class of 2024 for their perseverance during the pandemic and their potential to tackle today's challenges, from misinformation to climate change.
"I believe that ‘the one can help move the many,’ in a positive, constructive way that is inclusive of everyone, as we are stronger together as ‘We the people.’ You can and will create a brighter future for all of us."

Chronic Disease Management App Takes Top Honors at Pitch Dingman | Smith School Journiy, led by critical care nurse Mildred Diggs, wins $25,000 in the University of Maryland's Pitch Dingman Competition for its culturally conscious platform aiding diabetes and heart disease management. Diggs aims to bridge healthcare gaps with tailored care plans.
On May 7, Finance Grand Challenges Speaker Series featured its most high-profile guests to date – Maryland U.S. Senator Ben Cardin and Linda McMahon, former administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment.
Small business owner optimism hits lowest level since 2012, noted by Dean’s Professor of Finance Michael Faulkender during the event. Senator Ben Cardin and Linda McMahon discussed factors contributing to pessimism, including interest rates, real estate market, and international instabilities.

Bill Boyle ’81 founded and was president of FiberGate, Inc., a Washington D.C. metro area provider of Dark Fiber services. FiberGate developed local fiber optic backbones along strategic routes in Baltimore, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George’s, and Frederick Counties in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and the City of Alexandria, Loudoun, Fairfax, and Arlington Counties in Northern Virginia. Mr. Boyle ran the company for 17 years and successfully exited in the fall of 2012.
