Owens House
Helping children/families who experience child abuse and trauma; community prevention; MDT training.
We are thrilled to be the beneficiary of this year’s Lay Lake Boat Club Poker Run! It’s going to be a fun day on the lake. 🚤☀️
Need a service project for the summer? Help us stock our snack shelves to get ready for the school year! Our center typically sees a spike in cases once school is back in session as children are around mandatory reporters after a summer away.
If your office, civic group, small group, Sunday school class, etc would like to host a snack drive reach out to us at 205-669-3333 or email [email protected]
It’s Forensic Interviewer Appreciation Week and we are blessed with the BEST! Owens House is proud of our Forensic Interviewers, Maribeth Bowman and Andrea Vazquez. Without Maribeth and Andrea creating a safe space, our children would not be able to share their stories with bravery and receive the opportunity for healing. These women are heroes and deserve all the kudos for their professionalism and care they provide to children every day.
Help us celebrate with them by leaving a comment! 🎉
This week our staff is taking a much needed summer break. We will be out of office until July 8th. If you need to make a report of abuse please call Shelby County DHR at 205-669-3000. As always, if a child is in imminent danger dial 9-1-1!
We look forward to returning next week feeling rested and ready for the remainder of the year. ☀️
We are so grateful for the many partnerships we have within Shelby County.
On Wednesday, Maribeth had the opportunity to present about team training and development at the monthly Investigators’ lunch, hosted by the Shelby County District Attorney's Office.
Thanks so much for inviting us to come out!
Shame dies here!
Joined our friends Shelby County AL Schools for their annual Community Partner Cookout! 🌭 It was great to see our friends and enjoy a delicious meal. Laurel even won the fireworks raffle prize! 🧨🎆
Friends, we are looking for a TRUCK to pull this travel trailer for trainings!
Over the last few years members of our Multidisciplinary team have created and implemented immersive trainings that take investigators, social workers, and even patrol officers from the crime scene to the courtroom and beyond. This training is the FIRST of its kind in Alabama and covers all aspects of child abuse response and investigations. Our team has presented on this training model on state, national and international levels. As a result of this success we are scheduled to bring these simulation trainings to teams in Alabama covering 10 counties this fall.
Please share this post. This is such an exciting opportunity for Owens House, Shelby County, and child victims across the state. If you, your business, or someone you know wants to donate a truck please reach out to us 205.669.3333. This donation is tax deductible as we are a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Alabama Network of Children's Advocacy Centers, Inc. (ANCAC)

The biggest protective factor for a kiddo is having a positive adult figure in their life. This can reduce some of the effects of even the most serious Adverse Childhood Experiences, like trauma and abuse.
Rita Pierson sums it up perfectly- “Every child deserves a champion- an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.”
"The nationwide movement of Children’s Advocacy Centers now turns to you, and everyone who cares about a child and their parent having somewhere to turn on the worst day of their life, and we ask: raise your voice. Give kids a shot at the future they deserve. This isn’t a partisan issue, this isn’t a talking point, this is a vital support system countless families rely on nationwide and it deserves to be well-funded."
Stabilizing crime victims’ funding is a win America’s kids desperately need The act calls attention to the threat facing victims of violent crimes and asks for support to save the fund that offers those victims justice and healing.
Free laundry day is this Wednesday at Suds-R-Us in Montevallo. No questions asked! No registration!
Looking back on and we are filled with gratitude. Thank you to everyone who helped us Paint the Town Blue, contributed to or attended a fundraiser, donated snacks and drinks, or gave a monetary gift. While we were conducting 50 forensic interviews this month, you all were making a positive impact in their lives. We cannot thank you enough!
