Ohio Osteopathic Association
The OOA has been serving the osteopathic profession and the residents of Ohio since 1898.
To OOA Members:
We wish you a Labor Day weekend filled with appreciation for the work you do and the impact you make.
On International Overdose Awareness Day, we pause to remember the lives lost to overdose, a heartbreaking reminder of the urgent need for compassion and action in addressing addiction. Today, let's honor their memories by fostering understanding, supporting recovery, and spreading hope. Let's work together to prevent tragedy and heal our communities.
August is National Immunization Awareness Month, a crucial time to highlight the power of vaccines in preventing disease and saving lives. Each year, vaccines prevent up to 3 million deaths worldwide, emphasizing their critical role in public health.
Earlier this month, OOA representatives participated in the Ohio Immunization Summit, a gathering of nearly 70 advocates discussing how to make an impact at the Statehouse, at clinics, and in communities.
In 1973, the US Congress designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day. The date was selected to commemorate the ratification of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote.
The observance not only recognizes the suffrage movement, but also calls attention to the continuing efforts toward full equality and the strides women have made across various fields, including medicine. Women physicians contribute invaluable perspectives to patient care, medical education, health policy, and more. We celebrate their contributions as they continue to break barriers, inspire change, and shape the world around us.
The unconditional love of a pet can do more than keep you company. Pet ownership offers a multitude of benefits, particularly in terms of physical and mental health. The companionship of pets can improve mood, reduce stress, and encourage physical activity—all contributing to overall well-being.
Look for more about the power of pets in the upcoming issue of "Buckeye Osteopathic Physician."

The Columbus Osteopathic Association (COA) was proud to support the 10-Year Anniversary Celebration at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine Dublin campus held earlier this month.
It was an opportunity to reflect on a decade of achievements and look forward to the future of the osteopathic profession in Central Ohio while welcoming the Class of 2028.
The COA, one of OOA’s 10 district academies, has sponsored the annual picnic every year since the Dublin campus opened its doors in 2014.
And a good time was had by all😀
The Northwest Ohio Osteopathic Association (NWOOA) hosted medical students and members at a social event last night in Perrysburg. The evening included conversation, food, and fun!
NWOOA is one of OOA's 10 district academies. The districts provide professional support to DOs and OMS locally and promote osteopathic visibility and outreach in the community.

Did you know 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer?
Be aware of the broad impact of excessive sun exposure. UV radiation can lead to various skin issues and negatively affect vision.
What a wonderful afternoon! OOA President Doug Harley, DO, participated at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine Convocation & White Coat Ceremony today in Athens. He has a message for the newest members of the osteopathic family:
Today we celebrate the father of osteopathic medicine. The pioneering principles of Andrew Taylor Still, MD, DO, continue to guide the profession. From bedside manner to osteopathic manipulative treatment, this holistic medical approach has touched countless lives.
WE LOVE THIS BILLBOARD!😍
(And yes, we're shouting!)
Osteopathic medicine is defined by a whole-person, hands-on approach to health and wellness.
Good health is about more than the absence of disease and Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) are trained to look beyond symptoms and focus on the whole person because the best health care encompasses body, mind, and spirit.
That’s why we don't just treat patients, we treat people.
OOA | Find a Physician This list includes all licensed DOs practicing in Ohio—regardless of Ohio Osteopathic Association (OOA) membership status.
We have lots more photos from the American Osteopathic Association House of Delegates meeting in Chicago, July 19-21.
Thank you to all of the OOA members who served as delegates.
This Disability Pride Month we honor the diverse abilities that enrich our world. Every July is an opportunity to recognize and honor the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of the disability community.
A study states that 1 in 4 people who are living with a disability are discriminated against. By raising awareness, we unite to advocate for a world where no one is unfairly judged for a condition that in no way defines their strength.
Thank you to these Ohio DOs and medical students who participated in the AOA House of Delegates over the weekend. They joined more than 500 physicians and students from around the country to consider policy positions that impact physicians and patients.

The Ohio Department of Health is raising awareness among physicians and health care providers about a potential exposure to bats at an overnight camp in Richland County. The camp included attendees from across the state, so medical offices throughout Ohio may be affected.
Local health departments are reaching out to affected individuals to conduct risk assessments and are advising those exposed to bats to contact health care facilities in their jurisdiction to obtain rabies post-exposure vaccination as appropriate.

OOA Past President Robert W. Hostoffer, Jr., DO, of Cleveland, has been selected as the 2024 American Osteopathic Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. This pinnacle award honors individuals who have made significant, fundamental contributions to the osteopathic profession throughout their career.
Dr. Hostoffer's impact on the profession has been immense, as he has supported osteopathic projects with his time, talent, and treasure. One well-known example is the Scholar Series. Dr. Hostoffer originally created the video series in 2015 after he saw the need to develop scholarly work within osteopathic training programs. His focus was to help residents meet ACGME program requirements. He worked with other physicians and researchers to develop the content and then funded the project himself. The Scholar Series has been an enormous gift to the entire osteopathic community, as many organizations, faculty, and individual DOs have used the program.
Dr. Hostoffer is a nationally recognized expert in allergic and immunologic disorders affecting both children and adults. He has been clinical professor at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, associate professor at Case Western Reserve University, and program director of the Pediatric and Adult Allergy/Immunology Fellowship at University Hospitals Richmond Medical Center, the first AOA-accredited A/I program in the US.
Dr. Hostoffer will receive the award in September at the AOF Honors Gala in San Antonio, Texas, during OMED, the world’s largest gathering of osteopathic physicians.

The OOA signed on to a letter this week with nearly a dozen physician organizations in the state to support HB 452, legislation aimed at preventing violence against health care workers and hospital employees.
The bill requires all hospitals to have a violence prevention and reporting plan in place, as well as standardized notification requirements for patients and visitors on these policies. Further, the Ohio Department of Health is tasked with creating a process for hospital plans and incidents to be reported and analyzed. Lastly, HB 452 requires the Ohio Department of Higher Education to survey students of clinical education programs on training for workplace violence.
Members can read more about this and other advocacy efforts at the Statehouse in today's OSTEOFACTS.
