Team OHIO Roller Derby

It's with great sadness that I share the loss of #59 Lorraine Acid. She skated with me at Ohio Roller Derby and then she moved to NY and skated with Suburbia.
She was an all star derby player. She could make her body move in the strangest, most effective ways. She was a kind soul to all that knew her. She brought joy to many.
As we mourn her loss, I only hope that she knows how much of a ripple she has left in the universe to those who knew her, and that she was loved by many.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Ohio Valley Roller Girls tonight. They lost a former teammate unexpectedly today. My God watch over her family & friends during this difficult time of loss.

One thing I've always enjoyed about skating is other teams opening their doors to allow traveling skaters the opportunity to practice.

2017 saw a lot of changes in my derby career. I retired from skating due to pregnancy and became a skating official.
I'm excited to be back on skates as a skater for 2018. Looking forward to my little one being a part of these memories.
His derby name will be revealed at our home opener on March 17th.

Last night was my first scrimmage back post baby (10 weeks, 2days post baby) overall it felt good. Definitely need to work on some things but I remembered how to do more than I thought I would!

As some of you know, I was pregnant this year.
I gave birth Oct 2 to a beautiful baby boy.
Today, 6 weeks postpartum, I passed my 27 in 5!

It starts Friday, so those on the East coast don't have to try to sneak in watching at work until 1 pm! WFTDA.tv has stream (for a small fee) or free audio. It's well worth the fee to watch great derby over the course of the weekend.

Watching Ohio Roller Derby play in International WFTDA D2 Tournaments was a mix of emotions. This quote kind of sums it up. I started out the season on this team, then transitioned into reffing at 11 weeks pregnant. So this year I was watching, rather than playing, after 10 years of derby.
It was so fun to watch them. They came together as a team and it showed on the track. I saw really great things from a lot of different skaters! And I made a few fans of derby as folks asked me what I was watching on my phone in the middle of a volleyball tournament at Put-in-Bay. (Yes I did get some playing in at 33 weeks, Ohio couldn't be the only ones having fun!).

This is happening this coming weekend! What better way to show your support than to help with some of the financial burden of playing a sport in which players have to pay all their expenses. This isn't pro, it is completely an amateur sport. Not only do skaters play, they run the business.

I'm officially 6 months pregnant today. Many people think this means no derby for me. Of course that is not what it means. It just means a transition from playing the contact sport to being involved in other ways.
I have stepped into the role of skating official and so far have enjoyed it. Although I can no longer actively cheer for Ohio Roller Derby, when in my stripes. I still give league members unsolicited feedback about what they are doing. I get a birds eye view skating around with them looking for penalties.
Will I stay in this role? Who knows! It will be a decision I will make after October and my family has increased by one.

I can totally relate to Juke Boxx. I played our March 18 home bout at 11 weeks pregnant. I switched to officiating because I knew iwoudl be sad to be at practice and have to duck out of contract drills. This way I can continue to be on skates. (my backwards skating & stopping is going to be top notch by October!)
I played soccer through Febuary when the league ended. Currently, at 20 weeks, I continue to play indoor & sand volleyball - last night after reffing at our 2 hr scrimmage practice I played 3 games of women's 4s sand volleyball (they know I no longer dive on the court).
I talk with my doctor at every appointment about my activity level.
My husband, and my doctor, fully support my activity level. They just ask that I listen to my body, as it will know when it is time to scale back. So for now, my body still just wants me to eat - alot.

As some of you may know I had to hang up my jersey in March after our first home bout. But, I'm still on skates! Yesterday I had the pleasure of reffing with Wendra, whose from the same rookie class as me. We've been with the league 10 years.
We will see what next year brings, after October, when I know if I'm raising a future derby player or a referee for OHRD!
