Today in University Senate, President Kristina Johnson announced a plan to increase the minimum Graduate Associate stipend by $4,000 by Autumn 2021. This will be a 2-step process with the first increase effective this academic year, and the second increase to be in place for contracts starting Autumn 2021. The university is still finalizing exact implementation details of how the first increase will be administered. Previously the rate was $17,280 annually for a traditional 9-month appointment, and theses increases will raise the minimum stipend to $21,280.

We are grateful for the support of all collaborators including Student Life at Ohio State, Graduate School, Ohio State University, & the Office of Academic Affairs. Thanks to all the advocacy work our students have done, especially the Graduate Compensation and Benefits Committee. We will share more info as available!

In a letter sent to all graduate students at The Ohio State University, the Council of Graduate Students leadership let students know they do not simply “see them,” but that we also hear, understand, and share their frustration, anger, disappointment, and pain.

Institutional equity, inclusion, and diversity can no longer be mere talking points –– they must be backed by action. We can no longer say we champion diversity while remaining silent on issues affecting so many within our community.

We will not stop fighting until the voices, concerns, hardships, and experiences of Black students, faculty, and staff at Ohio State are prioritized by our institution’s leadership and real change is made.

Thank you for your support!

The Ohio State chapter of the AAUP stands in solidarity with the Council of Graduate Students (CGS) in its statement against the closing of Buckeye Village (see attached photo).

As the statement says, this closing of Buckeye Village and lack of commitment to provide affordable housing for affected students, especially students with families, goes against the values that Ohio State claims to cherish.

To quote directly: "Buckeye Village is a part of The Ohio State University’s tradition, as a 70-year-old community that hosts our student families, particularly veterans and international students. Despite past promises made by administrators to build a new Buckeye Village, no plans for sustainable family housing have been announced. As the Columbus community grows and market rates increase (see living wage data attachment), it has become a struggle for students with primary responsibility for their dependents to enroll at The Ohio State University. Further, most Big Ten and benchmark institutions offer affordable housing to students with families. This closure will no doubt exacerbate barriers for students with dependents and detract from the affordability and inclusivity of our university."

The CGS is right to call on the administration to (1) build new housing for students with families and others, (2) extend subsidies in a city with rising housing costs, and (3) form a committee that includes Buckeye Village residents and others.

Please share and circulate this statement to publicize the graduate students' demands.

Survey ranks lowest-rated off-campus real estate companies 10/31/2019

Data recently released by Ohio State Center for the Study of Student Life ranked University Village as one of the five worst off-campus reality companies. Yet, Student Life at Ohio State and Administration & Planning officials are proposing to relocate Buckeye Village residents there.

University Village ranked poorly in terms of cleanliness and maintenance, among other things. We are calling on The Ohio State University President Michael V. Drake & his administration to do what’s right for Ohio State students with families. These students deserve to live in a safe, clean, & comfortable environment.

It is evident, based on data collected by the Office of Student Life that University Village is not an ideal living space for any Ohio State students, let alone students with children. Now is the time for the University to prioritize a group that has often be forgotten.

We hope the University’s administration will respect our shared governance model and quickly begin having conversations with CGS and current Buckeye Village residents to find a better plan than the proposed option, that was decided without student input.
