Stonewall Columbus Pride Interfaith Prayer Service, held June ``, 2024

Approximately sixty people attended the Stonewall Columbus Pride Interfaith Prayer Service on Tuesday, June 11, at the Stonewall Columbus office at 1160 N. High St.

Sponsoring organizations for that event had been LOVEboldly, "a faith-based nonprofit creating and developing spaces where LGBTQ+ people can flourish in Christianity," and Stonewall Columbus, which "stands at an intersection of culture, community, and advocacy, proudly serving as a vibrant organization dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community in Central Ohio and beyond."

Presenters during the Stonewall Columbus Pride Interfaith Prayer Service included representatives from several different versions of Christianity and representatives from Islam, Buddhism, paganism, and Quakerism.

The opening prayer was led by a pagan woman who first thanked the event planners for inviting her to participate and then for inviting her to lead the prayer.

Before presenting his message, the Buddhist representative similarly thanked the group for including a Buddhist representative in the program.

The Quaker representative told the story of what had prompted him to become a Quaker about forty years ago, gave several examples of how Quakers have been supportive of the LGBT movement over the years, and then facilitated two minutes or so of "Quaker silence."

Music played on an electric piano had been provided several times during the event by a Lutheran who had been dressed "in drag."

Several of the presenters spoke in support of those whose spirituality is completely "outside of the box" and does not necessarily conform to any of the known world religions.

The room had initially been set up to accommodate about thirty people; however, many additional chairs had to be brought into the room while people had been arriving to accommodate the large number of people who had decided to attend that evening.

At the end of the event, after we had sung a closing song, many of us went outside for a group picture that included about 2/3 of the people who had been present that evening.

Several of the people who had attended the Stonewall Columbus Pride Interfaith Prayer Service were not "out" to their respective religious communities, so it would not have been safe for their images to appear in the official photograph of that event.

The 2024 Gladden Lecture Series:
The Rev. Dr. Yvonne V. Delk
" Truth Telling: A Mission for the Church and Country
in an Era of Afrophobia, Critical Race Theory, and Christian Nationalism"
Sunday, June 23, 4 p.m.

Join us Sunday, June 23 at 4 p.m. at First Congregational UCC, 444 East Broad St. Columbus, Ohio 43215 for the 2024 Gladden Lecture series featuring The Rev. Dr. Yvonne V. Delk.

For more than 60 years, Rev. Delk has been a strong ally in the fight for human and civil rights for people of color, children, and the poor. In 1974, Rev. Delk became the first African American woman to be ordained as clergy in the UCC. She is the editor of the book Afro-Christian Convention: The Fifth Stream of the United Church of Christ. This is the story of faith, survival, and empowerment in the hostile environment of racism. This holy stream of African spirituality that flowed across the Atlantic Ocean up to the tidewaters of Virginia in 1619, the same stream that overflowed in 1957 into the worship and work of the United Church of Christ is given its long-overdue place in the canon of UCC.

The Rev. Delk will also preach at both the 9 and 11 a.m. worship services on Sunday, June 23.

The 2024 Gladden Lecture is being co-sponsored by the Washington Gladden Social Justice Park and a reception following the lecture will be held in the Social Justice Park.

Mounds and Memory Gathering 2024: Exploring Indigenous Sovereignty and Preserving Ceremonial Spaces and Mound Builder Stories on May 15, 2024
Cartoon Room 1, Third Floor, Ohio Union, Columbus Campus
9 am - 7 pm

The Newark Earthworks are the largest set of geometric earthen enclosures in the world. Honored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023, the entire Newark Earthworks originally encompassed more than four square miles.

It was built between CE 1 to CE 400 by the ancestors of contemporary American Indian peoples who are identified today as the Hopewell Culture/Era. This architectural wonder was part cathedral, part university, part social space, part cemetery and part astronomical observatory. Through their genius, hard work, and collaborative efforts these ancestors inscribed upon the land a remarkable wealth of indigenous knowledge relating to geometry and astronomy encoded in the design of these earthworks.
The Octagon Earthworks are aligned to the four moonrises and four moonsets that mark the limits of a complicated 18 year and 219 day-long cycle north and south on the eastern horizon.
This Gathering is built upon the hard work of organizers and attendees of previous Mounds & Memory workshops and the goal of this Gathering is to reunite participants in previous workshops, including representatives of the Rainy River First Nations (Ontario), the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Nation, The Ohio State University, the University of Toronto, and Harvard University. to share and celebrate these "monuments of the Ohio River Valley."
For more information, go to the website and scroll to the bottom.

Newark Earthworks Center | The Ohio State University The Newark Earthworks Center is an academic center of The Ohio State University that develops research about Midwestern American Indian cultures.
