Update on Scarlett: We first introduced you to adorable Scarlett back in February when she arrived at the shelter needing orthopedic surgery. This girl had her surgery months ago funded by Friends of the Shelter and is still waiting to find her forever family. Let’s help her find it!

Scarlett is about 5 years old and a medium mixed breed pup. She had a chronic hip fracture, which was repaired by the surgery at COVE. We’re thrilled for her that she has spent time with a foster family, and they have shared some great information about her to help her find the best family for her.

They said that Scarlett is ready for action and great adventure outdoors, followed by some downtime. She loves long walks and hikes, and she thinks that riding in car is great fun! Scarlett is crate-trained and has been in her crate up to 4 hours at a time. She is very curious and interested in new things—she’s a smart girl who wants mental entertainment, as well as physical. She loves meeting new people and may do well with older kids.

Scarlett gets very excited about squirrels and other small critters, so a securely fenced-in yard would be beneficial. Her ideal home is one with an active person who wants to take her along for the ride and has no small animals at home. Scarlett is looking for an adventure buddy for life.

Does this sound like your family? If so, please reach out to [email protected] for more information and to meet Scarlett. We want to see this girl with her forever family!

UPDATE ON KASO: this cutie had his orthopedic surgery at OSU last week and is now healing. He had a pin and screw put in to hold his leg together and make sure it heals correctly. Friends of the Shelter will send him back to OSU in a month for x-rays to confirm his leg is healing appropriately. He's on restricted exercise for a month. Thanks for helping us care for Kaso by donating for the shelter dogs' medical care!

If you'd like to foster Kaso while he heals, please reach out to [email protected].

Meet Kaso. He’s a one-month-old medium mixed breed male puppy, and, unfortunately he has a humeral fracture. Friends of the Shelter will be funding his orthopedic surgery at OSU to repair his leg. Thank you for supporting us so we can help save the sick and injured helter pups!

Chevy needs a foster! We introduced you to Chevy a couple of weeks ago. Chevy is a cute four-year-old bulldog mix. He arrived at the shelter with a luxated hip and leg (acetabular) fracture. The shelter medical team identified that he needed femoral head osteotomy (FHO) surgery to repair his hip and leg, giving him pain-free movement in the future.

Chevy went to COVE for his surgery last Tuesday, but he unfortunately contracted an upper respiratory infection, so his surgery was postponed. He’s on an antibiotic that ends this Thursday, August 8. Chevy says he’s ready to move to a foster or foster-to-adopt home now. He thinks it would be much more fun to hang out in a home while he finishes his medication and then as he recovers from his leg surgery. His surgical recovery should last about six-to-eight weeks. If you’re interested in giving Chevy some love and attention while he heals, please reach out to [email protected].

The shelter medical team identified that he will need femoral head osteotomy (FHO) surgery to repair his hip and leg, giving him pain-free movement in the future. He's having surgery at COVE later this week. He will likely need a foster to give him some TLC while he recovers. We will keep you posted!

This week, we welcomed four new dogs to the Friends of the Shelter family. Thanks to your financial support, all of these pups are getting the orthopedic medical care they need.

Meet our first one, Lydia. This sweet girl is a one-year-old perro de presa canario. She has a left distal radius leg fracture. Currently, Lydia has her leg splinted while at the shelter to stabilize it and make her comfortable.

Friends of the Shelter will be funding her orthopedic surgery at COVE (Central Ohio Veterinary Emergency) later this week. We'll keep you posted on her progress!

Meet Opie! This little one is seven months old and arrived at the Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center with a tibial tuberosity fracture. Friends of the Shelter is funding his medical care, so that the shelter team can send him for an orthopedic consult. If he needs surgery, Friends of the Shelter will be funding that, too. Thanks for helping us save these adorable pups!

07/17/2024

Meet Timmy! This adorable pup is a 10-month-old baby. He's at Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center with a fractured left femur. Friends of the Shelter will be funding an orthopedic consult and then any needed surgery to get him back on his feet as quickly as possible. He may be needed a foster, so we will keep you posted!

Our friends at COVE (Central Ohio Veterinary Emergency) sent us some photos of the Friends of the Shelter dogs that we have sent there. This is Velma, who we helped over a year ago. Isn't she adorable?!

Velma was six months old when she was found as a stray with another puppy. When she arrived at the shelter, Velma had a fractured leg and needs to have it surgically repaired. Thanks to your support for Friends of the Shelter, we were able to send her to COVE for surgery. You can tell they took great care of her while she was in their care!

While Velma is in her forever home now, we wanted to share this adorable photo with you! Thanks for helping us save pups like Velma!

Bexley Public Library is featuring the art of one of our strong supporters, the late Judith Vierow. Her family has established an organization to help some charities that were dear to her heart, and Friends of the Shelter is fortunate to be one of those. The art on display at the library is for sale, and you can choose to have Friends of the Shelter be a recipient of 50% of the proceeds, with the other half supporting the library. Visit the library to check out her amazing art!

Our Summer Art Exhibition is a retrospective of the folk art of Judith Vierow. Visit Bexley Public Library through August 30th to see what beautiful ideas flowed through her and onto the paper, as her friends and family like to say.

Update on Harrison! This cute puppy just wants to give everyone kisses! He’s about 8 months old and, unfortunately, arrived at the shelter with parvovirus. Friends of the Shelter funded his medical treatment at SOS of Ohio, thanks to your support.

Now we're so thrilled that he’s feeling good and testing negative for parvo! He's on the adoption floor at Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center and ready to meet his forever family. Is it yours? Please go see him today to find out! He is ready for some love!

Meet little four-month-old Tiger! He’s a boxer mix puppy who needs our help. When Tiger arrived at the shelter, he was limping. The Franklin County Dog Shelter vet team believes he is suffering from an “old” fracture of his left elbow. The vet team also noticed that he has structural abnormalities in his right front leg as well. Thanks to your donations to Friends of the Shelter, Tiger will be having an orthopedic consult so we can determine the best way to help him. We will keep you posted on his progress.

Friends of the Shelter funded his medical treatment at SOS of Ohio. Now he’s doing so much better and is ready for a foster home for a couple of weeks! Look at this cute face! Peggy is an adorable, ten-month-old, mixed-breed puppy. Unfortunately, she had a lateral patella luxation (LPL) when she arrived at Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center. This injury occurs when the patella (knee cap) dislocates to the outer part of the knee.

Peggy had orthopedic surgery at COVE to repair her knee, and she received a good report at her two-week check-up with the orthopedic surgeons.

Peggy was in a temporary foster home where she did great. Now, she’s back at the shelter and would love to be with another foster or foster-to-adopt family. Peggy has a few additional weeks of recovery ahead. If you’re interested in meeting Peggy and helping her through her recovery, please reach out to [email protected].

Meet Millie! Tiny Mildred (AKA Millie) is a 13-year-old miniature poodle mix. When she came to Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center, she was severely malnourished. Thankfully, Millie has been in a foster home, where she is safely gaining weight. Now, we're happy that she has reached an appropriate weight for her to be able to have surgery.

Friends of the Shelter will be funding Millie's medical care at SOS of Ohio, including a dental that requires several extractions, a mass removal, and a spay surgery. We’ll keep you posted on her progress. Thanks for helping us give dogs like Millie a second chance they need!

Smurf needs a foster! If you'd like to foster this cutie with some heart issues, please reach out to the shelter team at email in the comments. The Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center medical team asked Friends of the Shelter to help Smurf, an adorable two-year-old pitbull mix who was diagnosed with a heart murmur and arrhythmia. Friends of the Shelter funded a cardiology consult for Smurf, and the cardiologist is recommending that Smurf be on a heart drug for the next 30 days. Then, he'll return to the cardiologist for a follow-up examination to see if the medicine is helping his heart. Smurf would love to get some TLC from a foster family while he waits for his next appointment!

Happy Pride weekend from Acito! We introduced this cutie to you a couple of weeks ago. Acito is a one-year-old pit bull that arrived at Franklin County Dog Shelter & Adoption Center with some medical issues. The shelter medical team is working to determine what is causing his difficulties. They believe he may have pharyngeal trauma.

Friends of the Shelter funded a trip to a specialist for an upper airway examination. Nothing remarkable was discovered, so now we're ready to fund an upper airway scope to further evaluate his condition. In the meantime, this cutie loved the attention from the awesome shelter volunteers during their photo session!

Thanks to your support, we can help dogs like Acito! We will keep you posted on Acito’s progress and prognosis.
