A group of 40+ divers just recently went on a trip to Bonaire! 🌊 🤿 They spent the week diving, sharing great convos over dinner, and palling around with the local wildlife (fish, turtles, dolphins...and even some goats!). The end of the trip took an unexpected turn (a maintenance delay caused them to miss their connecting flight) and they ended up in NYC and got to see Times Square before heading home! 🏙️

What an incredible opening weekend at Gilboa we had! We had a whopping 36 new Open Water students certified, 10 Advanced Open Water, and over 20 staff members join us! These nearly 50 students braved the cold May waters like champions and had a wonderful weekend with us.

Meet Skid Rhoades, the charismatic Dive Master and an integral part of the Columbus Scuba team. With his infectious enthusiasm and a dash of handsome charm, Skid takes on various roles at Columbus Scuba, excelling in Try Scuba classes, Refreshers, and stepping in wherever his skills and charisma are needed.

During the summer, you'll find Skid fully engaged at the quarry, dedicating entire weekends to the underwater world. Off-season, he generously contributes to classes in various pools around town, sharing his passion for diving with others.

Skid's love for the underwater realm is profound. Growing up on the East Coast, he spent summers at the beach, fostering a deep connection with the ocean. Scuba diving became the key to unlocking the vast wonders beneath the surface. The vibrant colors of marine life and the sense of community at Columbus Scuba captured his heart.

Starting his diving journey in 2020, Skid dove headfirst into the underwater world, hooked immediately by the novelty of exploring reefs and the incredible wildlife. His commitment to diving deepened as he discovered the welcoming dive community at Columbus Scuba, forming lasting bonds with dive buddies and fellow enthusiasts.

Skid's diving adventures include witnessing Andy's seemingly magical connection with a loggerhead turtle and encountering a lobster the size of a standard poodle during a night dive. His favorite aspect of working with Columbus Scuba? It's unequivocally the people. The supportive community, coupled with the passionate instructors and Dive Masters, fueled Skid's rapid progression from a novice diver to a Dive Master with numerous certifications.

In addition to his diving feats, Skid is a high school Spanish teacher, devoted father of two adult sons, and a proud owner of an impressive comic book collection. Whether exploring the depths or enjoying board games, movies, and OSU football, Skid brings his unique energy and love for life to every endeavor. This past Saturday, Tyler Holbrook and his beautiful bride Olivia celebrated their marriage with a reception at the “Ellis” in Italian Village. More than 30 members of the Columbus Scuba family were there to help celebrate!

Olivia looked as beautiful as expected, and Tyler looked as dapper as ever. Dori and Matt were absolutely glowing in excitement. We’re just not sure if it was excitement for the wedding or them knowing that Olivia was now taking over the responsibility of keeping tabs on Tyler.

In all seriousness, though, Columbus Scuba certified Tyler when he was 12 years old, and the Holbrook family instantly became part of the CSI family. A weekend of checkout dives isn’t quite the same without Matt’s hobo pies and Tyler’s antics. We are so pleased to have Tyler back in Columbus again, now with his wonderful wife Olivia.

He left us for a minute to work as a commercial diver in Florida while finding his life partner. HE’S BACK!!! Welcome home, Tyler, and welcome to the family, Olivia!

Meet Joe Pietrykowski, our dedicated Dive Master at Columbus Scuba!

Joe finds his passion in helping with drysuit, AOW, and specialty classes, making every learning experience enjoyable. On weekends, you'll spot him assisting with classes, ensuring divers have a smooth and exciting journey underwater. During the off-season, Joe not only continues his diving adventures but also customizes a Honda side by side and expands his save-a-dive toolkit for unexpected equipment challenges during classes.

His love for diving goes beyond technical coolness; it's about the tranquility of floating neutrally buoyant, akin to flying as both the plane and pilot. Exploring an unseen world and witnessing the transformation of fellow divers brings immense joy. Joe began his diving journey in college, and over the years, it evolved into a lifelong fascination with the underwater realm.

What he treasures most about Columbus Scuba is the welcoming environment, which provides a space for learning, camaraderie, and skill advancement. Alongside his wife Jennifer, who is also a Dive Master, Joe spends summer weekends camping at Gilboa, contributing to the vibrant diving community.

Beyond the ocean, Joe is an electrical engineer, a University of Toledo graduate, and a Northwest Ohio native. Outside the diving world, he enjoys motorcycle rides, beer brewing, and spending time outdoors, riding bikes, and working on barn projects. Cheers to Joe for being an integral part of our diving family!
