ASLA Ohio is pleased to announce that the Excess Urban Heat Mitigation Act has been introduced in the Senate. If passed, this bill would provide grant funding through the Department of Housing and Urban Development to eligible municipalities and non-profit organizations for the implementation of projects designed to mitigate heat in urban areas. These potential projects include cool pavements, tree planting, green roofs, and shade structures. ASLA Ohio has also recommended to Senator Brown that Urban Tree Canopy Assessments and Urban Forestry Master Plans be added to the list of eligible project types.

UPDATE: OHIO BOARD OF BUILDING STANDARDS UPDATES DEFINITION OF REGISTERED DESIGN PROFESSIONALS

ASLA Ohio is pleased to announce that the Ohio Board of Building Standards has made the following revisions to the Ohio Building Code:

REGISTERED DESIGN PROFESSIONAL. Any architect holding a certificate issued under sections section 4703.10 and of the Revised Code, any landscape architect holding a certificate issued under section 4703.36 of the Revised Code, or any engineer holding a certificate issued under section 4733.14 of the Revised Code.

The Ohio Board of Building Standards has also released the attached memo to provide clarification on the ability of landscape architects to seal construction documents. The amendments above are solely for clarification purposes and do not expand or change the intent of the application of the definition today.

For more than a year, the ASLA Ohio Legislative Affairs team has been lobbying officials at the Ohio Board of Building Standards to clarify the definition of registered design professionals. This revision aims to ensure that landscape architects are not rejected when submitting construction drawings to certified building department personnel.

ASLA Ohio thanks all members of the Legislative Affairs Team who worked tirelessly to make this effort a reality, as well as the Ohio Board of Building Standards for their understanding and willingness to revise the Ohio Building Code for the benefit of all registered design professionals.

For more information, please contact Doug Boyer, Vice President of Legislative Affairs at 614-486-3343, or email at [email protected], or visit www.ohioasla.org.

The Ohio Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects

Founded in 1899, ASLA is the national professional association for landscape architects, representing 17,000 members in 48 professional chapters and 68 student chapters. The Society's mission is to lead, to educate, and to participate in the careful stewardship, wise planning, and artful design of our cultural and natural environments. Members of the Society use the “ASLA” suffix after their names to denote membership and their commitment to the highest ethical standards of the profession.

The Ohio Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects has its roots in a historic three-state chapter that included Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. As the ranks of landscape architects grew, this tri-state chapter split into three single-state chapters that are still in existence today. Home to many national officers of ASLA, the Ohio Chapter has been a leader in the profession of landscape architecture for decades.

The Ohio Chapter hosted the 1985 national annual meeting in Cincinnati, and the 1995 national annual meeting in Cleveland. National ASLA presidents elected from the Ohio Chapter include William Behnke, FASLA of Cleveland, Robert Mortensen, FASLA of Toledo, and the late Jot Carpenter, FASLA, former Ohio State University landscape architecture department chairman. Don Leary, FASLA from the Maumee Section of the Ohio Chapter currently serves as ASLA national vice-president for finance. Past national vice presidents from Ohio include Jennie Russell, FASLA of the Miami Section and Kathleen Fox, FASLA of the Buckeye Section.
