“Is alcohol interfering with the way I want to live?”
“Do family members or friends express concern over my drinking behaviors?”

How much is too much?
In a world where alcohol is often glamorized and even encouraged, it can be hard to identify when your drinking habits may be more than just casual consumption.
First, it’s important to recognize the different types of drinking and how to differentiate them.
Alcoholism: a dependency or addiction to alcohol has developed
Alcohol abuse: a pattern of drinking excessively, despite negative consequences
Casual drinking: a pattern of low-risk drinking that involves consuming alcohol in low doses on rare occasions
If you are ever unsure or worried about your drinking habits, you can take this anonymous alcohol use screening and access information about what you can do to help yourself: https://screening.mentalhealthscreening.org/recoveryisbeautiful
What is alcoholism, anyway?
While most of us have probably heard the term before, this we’re taking a deeper dive into what alcoholism really means and how you can to recognize it in your community.
Alcoholism is defined as the most severe form of alcohol abuse and involves the inability to manage drinking habits. It is organized into three categories: mild, moderate and severe. Each category has various symptoms and can cause harmful side effects.
Individuals struggling with alcoholism often feel as though they cannot function normally without alcohol. This can lead to a wide range of issues and impact professional goals, personal matters, relationships and overall health.
Does this sound like something you or a loved one may be struggling with? Visit our website at www.oacbha.org to find your local ADAMH Board and resources that can help.
Did you know that alcoholism is considered to be the #1 public health problem in the nation?
Every April the National Council for Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) sponsors to increase awareness outreach and education regarding the dangers of alcoholism and issues related to alcohol. The program was started in April 1987 with the intention of targeting college-aged students who might be drinking too much. It has since become a national movement to draw more attention to the concerns around alcoholism, as well as to provide resources to families and communities dealing with drinking problems.
Throughout the month we will continue to share resources with you to support this movement. We encourage you to and join us in sharing this information with your community!
