As the first Fulbright U.S. scholar from Ohio State’s Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Southerland will be traveling to several Australian hospitals to look at how they have implemented care recommendations for older adults, who often need assistance or treatment that differs from what is needed by younger patients. The implementation science skills she will be putting to work in that setting, she said, were refined through her time working with CATALYST.
“For other faculty at Ohio State, how lucky are we to have this type of group who are willing to work with us? I’ve been able to email the whole implementation science group that’s come out of CATALYST with ideas and to obtain feedback,” Dr. Southerland said. “You can’t come out of medical school or even a research fellowship and know everything, so having a group to discuss ideas, collaborate, and troubleshoot roadblocks is wonderful.”
Lauren Southerland, MD, MPH, carries implementation science torch from Columbus to Australia For Dr. Lauren Southerland, 2025 is only getting busier. She recently earned headlines when she was awarded a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award, which will see her go to Australia next year to advance her research.

Led by The Ohio State University faculty Arati Maleku, MSW, Ph.D., Cecilia Mengo, Njeri Kagotho and Sharvari Karandikar – The Immigration Project was recently featured in The Columbus Dispatch.
Results from the yearlong research project by the Columbus City Council and The Ohio State University College of Social Work revealed that successful integration and perceived quality of life for new American communities highly depends on their sense of belonging. As lead researcher, Maleku asked policymakers to use this data to better cater to Columbus’ growing immigrant population.
“The sense of belonging, as well as the challenges to the sense of belonging, have been a very understated study,” says, Maleku, principle investigator. “So, when successful immigrant integration is a goal for many municipalities, the degree to which immigrants have the sense of belonging is becoming a major policy issue.”

Mary T. Rodriguez, associate professor, Department of Agricultural Communication, Education, and Leadership, Ohio State - College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, has been awarded The Fulbright Program U.S. Scholar Award to research “Enhancing household and community resilience – advancing efforts for sustainable agri-food systems” in Canada from August – December 2024. Rodriguez will conduct community-engaged research with collaborators at the University of Alberta to develop a tool to measure resilience of the most vulnerable groups along the food system and then learn how to strengthen the systems around the groups to provide sustainable interventions and drive systemic change.
“As a Fulbright Canada Research Chair, I will partner with local collaborators (scholars, community members, and local organizations) to co-design a mixed methods case study aimed to explore household and community resilience in the context of the food system. Over the past several years, we have seen a dire need for more sustainable and resilient agri-food systems. Emerging issues such as COVID, climate change, changes in population, etc., have challenged the ability of our agri-food systems to provide our communities with food access and availability. This affects every sector of our population; however, it disproportionately affects our most marginalized communities,” Rodriguez explains.
