Congratulations to the Computer Science and Engineering Class of 2024! We enjoyed celebrating with our newest graduates this past Sunday.
Vishal Kumar is another outstanding graduating senior we’ve love to spotlight! Kumar, graduating this Sunday with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence and graduating with honors, was awarded the Fulbright Fellowship to spend a year in Taiwan. The fellowship supports students interested in education to spend a year abroad teaching in a K-12 school. Kumar already has experience teaching ESL to adult learners for a nonprofit. In Taiwan, he will work with elementary or middle schoolers.
“For me, I love education, teaching and computer science,” Kumar said. “It will be a year abroad and I will be more knowledgeable about the education landscape around the world which can ultimately inform my future work.”
Kumar has also been working with CSE Associate Professor Neelam Soundarajan and other students on a project to develop online video games for STEM education.
“While some of the other students in the group are interested in the project because it involves designing, implementing a game, Vishal's interest is driven more by his passion for education,” Soundarajan said.
“Vishal is animated by an extraordinary desire to help others,” Soundarajan said. Read Kumar’s full story, to be published next week. Congratulations, Vishal on all your extraordinary accomplishments!

Conventional measures to limit background noise have used AI algorithms to extract noise from the desired signal. But these objective methods don’t always coincide with listeners’ assessment of what makes speech easy to understand, said Donald Williamson, CSE associate professor and co-author of the study.
AI can use human perception to help tune out noisy audio Researchers have developed a new deep learning model that promises to significantly improve audio quality in real-world scenarios by taking advantage of a previously underutilized tool: human perception.Researchers found that they could use the subjective ratings of sound quality made by people and....
