Exploring spirituality and philosophy while in the forest: Associate Professor Amy Koehlinger takes to Andrews Forest for a week-long, immersive field class

While learning in traditional classroom settings is the norm for many OSU students, Amy Koehlinger, associate professor in the School of History, Philosophy, and Religion, took students on a week-long camping trip in Andrews Forest to explore the relationship between philosophy, spirituality, and most importantly, nature.

By being open minded and encouraging towards her students, Koehlinger created a welcoming, technology-free learning environment almost entirely made up of discussion, reading, and connecting with nature, as well as with one another.

Spotlighting local issues through photography: Photojournalist Jessica Hume-Pantuso utilizes photography and journalism skills from her time at the School of Visual, Performing, and Design Arts to educate readers in the Corvallis, Albany, and surrounding communities

As a photojournalist for the Corvallis Gazette Times and Albany Democrat-Herald, Jessica Hume-Pantuso, ‘22, finds fulfillment and joy in the work that she does.

“My goal is to use photography to help and support others,” said Hume-Pantuso. “The most rewarding part are the messages I get from people that tell me they saw my photos in the paper.” Hume-Pantuso graduated with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Photography from the School of Visual, Performing, and Design Arts (SVPDA), but she started developing her love for photography at a young age. She was always very observant, so being behind a camera allowed her to explore the world around her.

CLA students and faculty look to preserve peace with nuclear divestment

Outside the Asian & Pacific Cultural Center stands a persimmon tree grown from the seeds of its predecessor that survived the United States’ bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

Just as OSU’s Hiroshima Peace Tree honors two Hiroshima survivors, memorializing a legacy of peace and rebirth, faculty and students from the College of Liberal Arts have achieved another benchmark in upholding a legacy of peace within the Corvallis community by advocating for the divestment in companies that profit from the production of nuclear armaments.

Dr. Larry Rodgers: The growth and reimagining of the arts at OSU

Larry Rodgers, outgoing dean of the College of Liberal Arts (CLA), has always believed in the profound importance of the visual and performing arts and has worked hard to increase their visibility and impact at OSU and in the Corvallis community. Rodgers, since the beginning, has recognized that as a part of any University education, the arts provide the context and inspiration for discovery—they drive a culture of creativity, innovation, and diversity that is essential to a thriving academic ecosystem, regardless of the discipline.

The social distancing dots outside grocery stores are peeling. Shortages of toilet paper and baby formula are a thing of the past. The daily recounting of casualties is over. But the fact is that the world has been changed by the pandemic.

Now, Oregon State’s public service-minded experts are focused on learning from all we went through. In the Spring 2024 issue of the Oregon Stater, take a look at the important lessons we’ve derived, from changing the ways classes are taught to inventive modes of protecting our community’s health.
