I’ve had a few people ask about cramping recently, too!

There are MANY reasons you can get a cramp…and a few different ways to fix them.

This video covers a calf cramp fix that uses activation of the opposite muscle to turn the cramping muscle off.

This wouldn’t be as helpful if your cramp is due to electrolyte or hydration issues, but can be useful for “overstimulation” types of cramps.

This is NOT treatment or diagnosis, just education.

Single Leg Work is important for your feet.

This may look like an exercise for my hips (which it is), but it is also an exercise for my feet.

My feet feel the most “effort” when I do this and intentionally press my toes into the ground and keep my feet square with the wall in front of me while my hips are moving.

Try something like this using the wall and ground as resistance if you don’t have time to use weights or bands!

Questions? Drop them in the DMs.

Glute pain is pretty common in runners...and sometimes no matter how much you've rubbed it out, it still persists over time.

For this patient, who had chronic glute pain off and on for 10 years, it was a pretty simple set of exercises that fixed the pain.

Her body responded more quickly than either of us thought it might...and she had no glute pain by her 2nd visit!

Sometimes simple movements can make all the difference in the world.

If you want to see if this could be you, DM me to schedule a free zoom assessment so we can chat and see what might be possible for you!

Me and this absolute CHAMP are going to tackle a track 5k together this Saturday.

I’m pacing her to try to break 17:00 in her 40s!!! (She’s never broken 17 before.)

And I’ve never actually run a 5k on the track (but have run sub-17 on the roads multiple times).

I am incredibly excited for her and so excited that I get to be part of it.

Pacing is one of the most rewarding parts of running for me these days, it’s great to be part of someone’s special moments.

Wish us luck!

Also, heeeey to who is pacing ME in this pic and to who is running with us here and apparently on Saturday, too!

International Women’s Day!

I have so many successful, intelligent, kind and passionate women in my life who inspire me daily and who have contributed to all I have and all I am. (And sorry for those I couldn’t tag )

Thank you to all the women who support my chiro career and push me to be the best doctor I can be.

Thank you to all my teammates and fellow runners out there-without you I would not have learned to push myself and have confidence.

To my lady business mentors (special shout-out to because we don’t have a pic), thank you for showing me how to better a community through business and reassuring me that it’s okay to operate from the heart. ❤️

To all the women (in my life and not) who heal the world, contribute to humanitarian work, and push the boundaries on human education and knowledge, thank you.

The world is a better place for you all, I am a better person.

And for the OG woman in my life, thanks to my mom for teaching me how to live life with integrity, selflessness and humor. I love you.

Many people think they have Piriformis Syndrome when there’s actually something else causing the Piriformis to be tight and painful.

This video demonstrates some tests to help differentiate.

A few tests does not make a diagnosis…so this is not meant to diagnose or treat. Please see a provider to get a full battery of tests and an evaluation if you think you have this.

Do you have an actual pain in your butt? Does your glute pain keep you from running, biking, lifting, or just make life less enjoyable? Do you feel pain that's deep and achy into your glutes? Does it bother you when you're sitting or trying to sleep at night? Do you find yourself trying to sleep in certain positions to make it more comfortable? If you constantly feel nagging symptoms in your glutes, you could have Piriformis Syndrome. This happens when the Piriformis muscle gets so tight, it actually compresses a nearby nerve. It’s more rare than common, and usually happens when a person has a nerve that goes through the muscle instead of under it, which is an unusual anatomical variation.
This is not meant to diagnose or treat.

Sometimes, the most comforting thing when recovering from an injury is to know you have a specific plan to follow.

This patient was relieved to have a training plan that was appropriate for her comeback, as well as a progression of steps for how we would recover.

She was a busy working mom who also wanted to continue to run amazingly fast because running is

Having a plan to follow that fit her life and her goals and was appropriate to get her out of pain and still keep her fit for her goal races was very relieving for her.

It made it easy for her to implement and almost guaranteed her successful recovery from her low back pain.

SUPPORT.

(Today’s 1,000m time trial.)

Sometimes you need to ask for help.

When 2022 started I felt like I was already behind.

When I looked at what I could do to get closer to where I wanted to be, I realized that I needed to ask for more support.

Today I had one of my friend’s HS athletes hop out of his workout to pace my first 400m, then had another friend run my next 600m, and all the while we were pulling someone running a 1500m behind us.

It was all over the place but super fun and MUCH better than if I’d been alone. I ran 69/66/32 for a 2:48 for 1,000m, which is 2:14 pace for 800m with another 200m tacked on.

Good showing for today, getting ready for next week!

Crushed a “12 Days of Christmas” with this morning! It was amazing to see her rip through the workout (even though the bar actually did rip her a little bit) and hear that she can do things now that she couldn’t do for months because of shoulder pain.

You go, girl! So great to see you and work out with you 🎄❤️💚

Elbow Pain With Golf?

Think you might have Golfer’s Elbow??

This is one of the standard tests done for this condition.

This one test is NOT enough for a diagnosis, but can be helpful in leading you in the right direction.

12/11/21✨ USATF CLUB XC CHAMPS

The stats: 36th overall, 21:29.

What I’m proud of: a few seconds behind some women who have run at the world championships, placed in the top 5 at the US Olympic trials, and managed my thoughts fairly well.

What I still need to work on: feeling more confident in the longer distances and when I find myself near “faster” people. I also made some poor decisions on timing in the race, but that happens sometimes.

I moved up during the race and ran with some awesome ladies!
But it was one of my better cross country races and I LOVED the course.

Upon reflection, I’ve realized that I was a little uncomfortable with things before every breakthrough I’ve ever had and that while I do need to work on my confidence a bit, it’s not the end of the world and mental work *IS* part of training.

So grateful to my team and friends who made this possible and much better than I thought!

I love being part of making people's dreams come true!

This high school athlete wanted to make it back for the postseason with her team, and got hurt just as races were starting.

She was afraid she wouldn't be able to race at all or if she did come back, it wouldn't be with enough time to get fit.

When she got injured, she was the #2 girl on a very good team and was worried she wouldn't be able to run with the same girls post-injury!

But she also showed so much optimism and tenacity throughout her recovery and was so great to work with. I admired her love for running and go-getter attitude!

Working with high schoolers really brings me joy, it brings me back to the time in my life when I fell in love with running and reminds me of how great it is to be out running with your girls every day, working to get better and have fun!

When did you fall in love with running? Was there a specific moment? I'd love to hear 👇

FIRST TURKEY TROT ✔️🏃🏻‍♀️🦃
FIRST 10k ✔️
FIRST RACE WITH ✔️ 🏃🏻‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️

The stats: 35:50, 3rd Female, unlimited pain faces made in the last mile.

The recap: I wish it was a 5 mile race. Because BOY did I feel good during miles 4+5, which were my fastest miles. That last mile was long, though I guess the last 0.2 was 5:10 pace (I was desperate for it to be over).

I enjoyed being in a little rhythm and getting to run with some lovely people ( ). I definitely had some internal debates about how to run the distance and it presented some anxieties during the race because it was so much longer than my comfort zone.

At the same time, because it was a new distance, I couldn’t take myself too seriously. Waking up with stomach pain? Losing the bottom half of my uniform right before racing? Gusty winds? All I could do was laugh because it was a 10k and I couldn’t take it too seriously, so that was a blessing. In some ways, it was a fun new challenge.

Need to give some major props to Matt. It was amazing to race together (for those who don’t know, he’s my BF of 2+ years, is training for his 1st marathon, and coaches ). He kept it smooth and steady and yelled at me in that last mile when I started struggling. I wanted nothing more than to throttle him in that last mile when he was trying to get me to run faster, but a small part of me was thankful at the time, and a way larger part of me is way more thankful now.

Thankful for and Cush, my training buddy, for screaming at me in the end enough to get me moving-and my supportive teammates!

Sometimes things that seem completely unrelated can be a cause of pain.

As a provider, I have a love-hate relationship with that.

I think it is SO COOL how the body is interrelated, but sometimes I know it's going to be hard for the patient to accept mentally, which makes it less likely for people to do the rehab.

Sometimes they don't feel they are being listened to or that the main cause of pain is not being addressed.

My goal in a visit like this is to show people how working on one area can make another area feel better and expose everyone to the MAGIC 🌟 of the human body!

In this case, the patient was okay with the idea that the heel pain was coming from another area. We worked on low back rehab, and the heel pain proceeded to clear up pretty quickly.

Interested to find out if your pain or lack of mobility could be coming from somewhere else?

Book a free Zoom consult with me (link in bio) and let's chat!

About this weekend:

Learned a lot. No, actually.

People always say they learn a lot from races, but I realized this weekend that I was operating from some serious misconceptions.

I ran USATF SOCAL Cross Country Regional Champs on Sunday.

Cross country is a different sport from track.

I know, they have different seasons and all that. But somehow it never occurred to me that I really have to run them differently.

If a course has fairly “even” footing (even if it’s hilly), I usually do well, because I can rely on my ability to have a strong last mile to “make up” for the earlier parts of the race.

I’ve never trusted my ability to go out hard and hold it. But on the courses with a lot of “terrain”, I cannot rely on my speed to make up ground, because it’s physically harder to generate speed in that situation, and can’t suddenly just run 10-20 seconds faster on the last mile.

So I learned (finally) that if I’d like to run a better race on those courses with less forgiving grounds, I actually need to commit earlier, because it’s not a simple math equation to run a good time (at least not for me) the way it is on faster ground or on the track.

I will be trying to challenge myself to break a career-long habit of believing I cannot commit early on in a cross country race. And I’ll be doing it at USATF Club Nationals in December. This is me holding myself accountable to that.

Yes YOU CAN get better quickly from something that has been a problem for months.

You don't have to run (or lift, or bike or live life) with chronic pain, even if the conventional methods (rest, ice, foam rolling, etc.) have failed you.

Sometimes you just need another perspective (swipe to see what this patient's was).

I have to say, I LOVE working with high school athletes! They are so fun, and I love getting to be part of helping them chase their dreams.

This patient's goal was to help take her team back to the State Championships this Cross Country season and I've been greatly enjoying watching her results!

(If you're reading this, best of luck with the postseason!)

Want another perspective on an injury? I'm here for ya! Message me.

Feeling thoughtful about running lately.

Running has brought much joy into my life as of late.

There have definitely been times in my running career where that hasn’t been the case.

But to get to those periods of joy, sometimes you go through frustrating times.

I’m enjoying doing some more long distance work; it’s not something I’ve done much in the last year and it’s nice to shake things up a bit (and have workouts with a larger margin of error).

I think a relaxed but focused approach to it all has been key 🗝 to this.

I’m not trying to be a superhero in workouts. I’m not running crazy mileage (though it is higher for me right now than it has been for a long time).

Just getting some simple enjoyment out of my feet hitting the ground and getting to spend more time with people I ❤️ who also ❤️ that feeling.

And also...I’M RUNNING SOME MORE XC. And looking forward to it!

Time to give the elbow some love!

I rarely post anything about elbow rehab, so here’s a video on Golfer’s Elbow.

It is “inner” or “medial” elbow pain that often appears with golfing, but can come from other activities involving the elbow.

It is also called medial epicondylitis or medial epicondyle tendinopathy.

This video demonstrates a common test for golfer’s elbow but there is much more needed for the full diagnosis...this is not meant for diagnosis or treatment!

She is now back to biking 100 miles AND high elevation gain rides!

Originally she avoided long distances, lots of climbing, and regular cycling in general (and running too).

She used to ice her back daily for a year.

A couple weeks after we started working together, her husband realized she wasn't icing her back daily and mentioned it to her...she hadn't even realized she stopped doing it, but she did realize she was feeling good enough not to need it!

This patient did not think she'd ever get back into running, but she can now run, too!

It has been amazing to her about her long rides through picturesque places, and her vacation hikes in Hawaii!

The greatest thing? This patient was so resilient and positive through the whole experience. She did everything to get herself to this point and really went all in for herself.

It was a joy to work with her, and even more of a joy to see what she's done since fixing her back!

Is Running Slowly Destroying Your Knees?!!

The age-old adage always goes that running will make you have knee pain over time and it gives you “bad knees”.

This is not the case.

Have any of you experienced this or heard this myth?!

There are some good scientific articles on this, but this article is easy to read and sums a few up (DM me if you want me to send you the whole article).

RUNNING IS ACTUALLY BETTER FOR YOUR KNEES THAN NOT RUNNING (with a few exceptions).

If you’re going from couch to 5k...you may need to do some basic “physical readiness” prep for your knees, but you’re not going to destroy them and will actually make them better over time.

Send to that relative who’s always telling you that running will hurt your knees OR that friend who’s always complaining about their “bad knees”.
