If you want your child to start working toward saying phrases and sentences, they MUST know verbs (action words)! Think about it - 2 word combinations usually consist of two different types of words (ex: noun+verb)

One of the best ways to teach verbs is not only through play, but also narrating what you’re doing through your daily routines. “I’m WIPING you!”🧻”let’s WASH your face!” 🛁

Remember that before a child will say verbs, they have to understand them.

❓I’ll try to round up a list of some of my favorite books and songs for teaching verbs, but let me know if you have any favorites below! ⤵️📚🎶

*note: these verbs are in no particular order for teaching. I just included high frequency verbs that are likely to occur throughout your child’s day pretty often!

As you’re reading this, please remember that this post is truly about helping your child to meet their own unique potential & set them up for success more than anything else! And YES- of course you can have an evaluation earlier or later or at any time. The ages I discuss here are just typically when children get referred for early intervention. 💕

⭐️If your child was born early, it is important to adjust for pre-maturity when looking at this. Ex: child is 18 months but born 3 months early, use 15 month milestones until age 2! ⭐️

And 💥Reminder💥: Just because you’re getting the evaluation does NOT mean that your child will qualify for services. It is truly better to check and see (with an evaluation) than wait and see.

When it comes to getting services, I always recommend getting them if you have any concerns ASAP because:

⭐️ The majority of brain development happens between birth- age 3.
⭐️ Can help reduce your little one’s frustrations & make life easier

⭐️ Can help set them up for success socially, academically & build confidence

⭐️ You have nothing to lose!

🔔 Wait, what?! Just because your child is a late talker, they might not need speech therapy? Here’s the catch though— a certified speech-language pathologist should be the one to make that call, so we recommend getting support & seeing vs. waiting and seeing.

If your child doesn’t qualify for services, you can still get good information about your child’s development and get strategies & things to work on in the meantime!

📣 There’s more to speech & language skills than just the number of words your child can say! You truly have nothing to lose when it comes to seeking support.

Happy start of Turkey week Guys!!! I just wanted to give a shout out to one of our own.

As Many of you know, that ASHA was last week and our very own, Kerner presented not only 1, but TWO presentations!!!!! The process on being selected is INTENSE and I could NOT be more PROUD of her!!! She texted with me while she was there and kept me posted on her AMAZING presentations (my words, not hers lol) and she shared, "Got to hang with some of the SLPs which was really awesome including Melanie Potock, Michelle Dawson, Dawn Winkleman, Carly Veness and even met the host of the Speech Science podcast. Was so much fun!" I know the Speechies understand how AWESOME that is!!!!
