Senior Donny Duggan spent last semester in Spain!

“My time in Madrid was, in short, completely amazing! I lived with my host mom and seven other study abroad students in an apartment just a block from Madrid’s beautiful Retiro park. Every day, I would walk or take the incredibly efficient bus or metro system to my classes downtown, which was always one of the favorite parts of my day. Madrid is a beautiful and fascinating city, but its central location in Spain gave me the opportunity to visit so many places like Sevilla, Granada, Barcelona, and Santiago de Compostela! Having to speak Spanish on the daily (my host mom hardly knew any English) really helped me develop confidence in my speaking skills. I will never forget the incredible Muslim and Mudejar art and architecture that I saw all over the country. Madrid is an experience I could not recommend highly enough to anyone considering to go!”

“It was an enriching experience to be part of the culture and learn the language with my host family and professors. Throughout my time in France, I was able to travel to neighboring countries, become associated with local culture, and, most excitingly, visit some of France’s most iconic structures like the Eiffel Tower, Strasbourg Cathedral, swim under Aqueducts, and go to the Paris Bals de Pompiers. I am very grateful to have had this chance and can’t wait to return!”

Guadalupe Roman (BA Hunan Rights, BA Spanish, and BS Education) recently participated in SMU-in-Mediterranean this past January.

“My experience with SMU-in-Mediterranean would not have been as impactful without the incredible professors. I particularly enjoyed learning from professor Aboubakr Jamaï and his lectures on Islam. I think that part of studying abroad is expanding our world view to create a more just and inclusive education system. The course Europe and the Islamic World did just that. We had difficult conversations about the current issues facing the Arab world all while immersing ourselves in the culture.”

Adam Thiret is a Finance Major and East Asian Studies Minor who recently studied abroad with the SMU-in-Japan program! Here's what he had to say:
 
"Around 40 years ago my mother lived in Tokyo Japan... I had to discover for myself what my mom loved about Japan. The SMU-in-Japan program gave us a unique opportunity to immerse ourselves into a Japanese university, work with Japanese students, and live with a Japanese family. Words cannot express how humbling of an experience it can be to totally uproot and change everything about your life...
I came to Japan having self-studied the language for a couple months in my spare time but was still completely unable to properly speak the language. I am proud to say by the time I left Japan I was speaking to my host family in almost entirely Japanese, which is something I didn’t even know I was capable of."
 
Inspired by the SMU-in-Japan program, Adam is continuing his Japanese language studies upon returning to SMU.

This summer, SMU student Ethan Barnella interned at the Czech Chamber of Commerce in Prague, Czech Republic.

“During my time at the Chamber I met many ambassadors and business leaders from around the world which greatly improved my network. My internship gave me first-hand diplomatic experience and helped develop an understanding of international business practices.”

Students pursuing SMU Internships abroad are placed in a unique and memorable position that suits their individual goals. Ethan's mentor was the director of the Foreign Department of the Czech Chamber of Commerce.
