As North Texas Giving Day approaches, we are thrilled to share the story of one of our incredible teachers, Miss Johnson. Her journey from the corporate world to the classroom is a testament to the transformative power of education.

Miss Johnson started her career with a business degree and a successful corporate job. However, she soon realized her true calling was in education. She then made a bold leap and transitioned to the classroom, where she has been a dedicated CTE (Career and Technical Education) teacher at Crowley Middle School for the past four years. This year, Miss Johnson started utilizing the EOD curriculum for the first time.

In this short time, Miss Johnson has witnessed a profound transformation in her students. Through the EOD curriculum, they are now making informed decisions about their career paths, aligning them with their unique skills and passions. The EOD curriculum has played a pivotal role in guiding these young minds towards fulfilling futures.

As North Texas Giving Day is a week away, we invite you to be part of our mission to empower teachers like Miss Johnson. Your support will help us continue to provide innovative educational resources, mentorship, and opportunities for students in North Texas. Please consider making a donation to help us reach our $5,000 goal today (https://www.northtexasgivingday.org/organization/Eodntxgd23). Together, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of students and ensure a brighter future for our community.

Is it time we add career-focused pennants to the walls of middle and high? Walk around most schools today and you'll see hallways lined with colleges and universities. Our mission is to activate students to determine and pursue an informed future, including going straight into a career after high school. As Forbes writes, "Why are we sending the visual signal that the 'name on the pennant' is the endgame for our learners? What would it take to reorient our learners’ aspirations to include both postsecondary education and career pathways?" Read more here: bit.ly/40fLmY2

A new national survey found that Americans think K-12 schools should put a higher priority on preparing students for careers and basic life skills rather than college readiness. At EOD, this is a trend that we've been following for several years, which is why our program emphasizes future-ready skills such as problem solving and growth mindset. It has been noted by many that young people today are very invested in the world and its future. What an amazing aspect of our young people! EOD has chosen to lean into this trend and hopes to encourage students to engage in their community and become problem solvers. While the problems that students may choose to engage with are as diverse as the students themselves, EOD wants students to feel confident and prepared to harness their soft skills to improve their community and their future.

It's National School Choice Week! At EOD, we advocate for smart, thoughtful, impact-driven choice programs for public school districts across the United States. Options are critical for students and their families and we assure that they have access to the information needed to make informed decisions about the future. But often, information about school choice is misguided. Read our piece in Texas Tribune on the important differences between school choice and school vouchers here: http://bit.ly/3XXlzm3

We hope that you will consider supporting Education Opens Doors this holiday season. Your support will impact students like Bianca, an EOD alumnus, who is now a senior at Booker T. Washington High School. Bianca’s story starts with her mom, Jennifer, who grew up in a West Dallas neighborhood where education was not a priority. Jennifer knew she wanted more for Bianca. The EOD program was that solution providing Bianca support and a clear pathway to start planning her future.

Many students are challenged by the lack of guidance provided in high school. On average, Texas students receive less than 40 minutes of guidance each year. We believe students deserve more resources. For every $100 donated, we can provide our program to one more student in need and ensure that 40 minutes of college and career guidance turns into 1,200 minutes.

Our Story

Education Opens Doors (EOD) activates all students to determine and pursue an informed future. Our groundbreaking program is composed of college and career knowledge in addition to soft skills not taught in traditional academic courses. Our primary focus is to open doors for middle school students from communities of color, low-income communities, and future first generation college students.

Since 2012, we have collaborated with schools and organizations throughout the state in order to provide teaching support, instructional tools, and engaging lessons aligned to our student manual and the school's specific needs. We train teachers to implement our program during the school day, legitimizing and increasing exposure to college and career knowledge for all middle school students.

During the 2018-19 school year, EOD is serving over 12,000 middle and high students at campuses in Dallas and across North Texas through targeted partnerships with public, private, charter, and magnet schools, as well as after-school and mentor programs.
