Cabbage "Tostadas" with Lime Crema 🍋‍🟩🍅

Ingredients

Cabbage Steaks:

• 1 green cabbage
• Avocado oil spray
• salt to taste
• taco seasoning: chili powder, onion, powder, garlic powder, paprika, cumin

Toppings:

• Avocado oil
• 1 small sweet onion, diced
• 1 lb ground beef
• chili powder, onion, powder, garlic powder, paprika, cumin, salt

• 14 oz can refried black beans
• 8 oz grape tomatoes, sliced

Lime Crema:

• 1/4 cup coconut yogurt
• 1/2 large lime, juiced + zested
• 1 tsp honey
• almond milk for thinning

Instructions

Cabbage Steaks:

• Preheat oven to 425℉. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.

• Keep your cabbage core intact, slice cabbage in half first then into thick slices. Place them on a baking tray and spray with avocado oil. Season with seasonings. Roast in oven for 35 minutes

Toppings:

• In a large skillet, heat oil and then saute onion for 2 minutes. Add in the ground beef and using a wooden spoon break everything up until no longer pink and cooked through. Season with seasonings, generously. After spreading the refried beans on top of the cabbage slices, top them with the ground beef and pop back into the oven for 5 minutes

Assembly:

• Remove from oven and top with tomatoes

Lime Crema:

• Blend together the ingredients and drizzle over the top

These are 8 root causes of constipation that are not often considered in the traditional standard of care:

1. Fluids- make sure you're drinking enough; increase your fluids if you increase your fiber; be sure to add in minerals if you have a water filter

2. Fiber- the average American gets ~15g of fiber per day, but it should be more like 25-30g minimum. Mix up the plant based foods!

3. Your brain/stress- Stressing is one of the number one reasons people are (and stay) constipated. You need to give your nervous system a break if you want it to do things more efficiently.

4. Stomach acid- Low stomach acid can lead to constipation. If you're low in stomach acid, it's much harder to digest heavy protein/meat meals, and things move much slower.

5. Medications- It's a good idea to research the side effects of any medication you're on. Assess if the constipation worsened around the same time of starting it. This allows you to bring it to your provider that started you on it to discuss possible alternative options.

6. Thyroid- A low functioning thyroid can be a notorious contributor to SIBO and constipation. Most traditional practitioners don't run a full thyroid panel, which means you're missing a lot of the picture. Addressing the whole thyroid may greatly change your bowel habits.

7. GI infections- The main infections that cause constipation are methane-dominant SIBO, dysbiotic flora (imbalance of the good and bad gut bacteria), and candida overgrowth. It's not always as simple as taking a probiotic, eating more veggies, and giving it time.

8. Food sensitivities- Many food sensitivities present themselves as constipation. The most often offenders are corn, soy, shellfish, and eggs, but could be a completely different list depending on what you're experiencing.

You can't ask your body to heal if you're not giving it the tools to do so! I'm here to assist with these things. Here's to happier, healthier days ahead.

"I am a medical professional and have believed for some time that we often jump to prescribe medications to treat the symptom rather than fix the underlying cause. My recent personal experience with Gabrielle has confirmed it! We need more practitioners like her who listen, evaluate, and look for the root causes and aim to restore our bodies to health rather than jump to pharmaceuticals to cover up the symptoms.

I initially saw Gabrielle to evaluate my gut health and optimize my nutrition. I've maintained a healthy lifestyle, but as I've gotten older, I began having some issues with sleep and my gut. In our initial consultation, we discussed my medications and my lack of vitamin and mineral supplementation. A part of that discussion was related to my "benign essential tremor" that I was diagnosed with over 10 years ago. Initially, my P*P thought it may be thyroid related and ruled that out. I then saw cardiology and neurology with basic blood work. When they couldn't find any abnormalities, they called it "benign" and put me on several different beta blockers, an anxiety medication (that gave me terrible side effects) and ultimately ended with a beta blocker that for the most part stopped the shaking.

After I met with Gabrielle, I started on her recommended vitamin supplementation. Within maybe 2 weeks.... no more beta blocker and no more tremors!!"
