Oak Lawn Library Friends Inc.

Oak Lawn Library Friends Inc was formed in 1995 to support the Oak Lawn Library branch in Dallas, Texas.

The Oak Lawn Library Friends funds board games for young children, graphic novels and comics for LGBTQ teens and sponsors monthly art shows for local artists. We also pay for a subscription (50 copies) to Book Pages which covers newly published books. We have funded the painting of the lobby, bulletin boards, new furniture for the children and adults. Every public space has been painted by money r

Library staff asked our group to pay for plants in the walkway beside the library. Because they did not have staff to water the plants, we opted for plastic plants. Imagine my surprise when I stopped by the library this week to see a lot of those plastic plants had been stolen. These were cheap plastic plants from TEMU $2 or $3 a bunch. I can't imagine you can fence them for very much money.

A message from the Friends of the Dallas Public Library. Of special note, the bathrooms at the Oak Lawn Library were going to be upgraded in the proposed bond program. Now the city manager has cut those funds.

Also, 3 libraries that have been in the works for 20 years have been cut from the proposed bond program.

Library Advocates -

We are reaching out to you with an urgent plea. The stakes are high, and we need your impassioned support to ensure that our library buildings receive the attention they deserve.

This Wednesday, December 6th, beginning at 9 AM, the City Council will be presented with the City Manager's recommended 2024 Bond numbers.

Shockingly, the needs of our Dallas Public Library are inadequately represented in this crucial proposal.

After months of work by the Citizen's Bond Task Force, City Staff has essentially ignored their recommendations for the Dallas Public Library

The gravity of this situation demands our immediate attention.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
The Citizen's Bond Task Force, appointed by the City Council, initially proposed $28,165,000 for Dallas Public Library's facilities. However, the City Manager has significantly reduced that amount to just $11,135,000, representing a drastic 61% reduction. Scroll down for a link to the City Manager's recommendations.

Three of our library sanctuaries, the North Oak Cliff, Preston Royal, and Park Forest branches, stand on the brink of not being fully funded either for full replacement or renovation.

More distressingly, nine library locations still languish in non-compliance with ADA standards, depriving countless individuals of access to the wealth of knowledge within.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Councilmembers need to hear from you NOW!

Call or email the Mayor and City Councilmembers TODAY! Follow this link to send an email. In your own words, them know how you feel about the City Manager's recommendations for the library. Demand the funding to bring all branches up to ADA code. Reiterate the need for new facilities for the North Oak Cliff and Park Forest branches. Demand the renovations for the Preston Royal branch.

THESE WERE ALL PROMISED YEARS AGO!

Speak at Wednesday's City Council Meeting. We'd like to have at least 5 speakers signed up. Follow this link for details and to register to speak to the City Council this Wednesday, December 6th starting at 9 AM. The deadline to register is tomorrow, Tuesday, December 5th at 5 PM. We're hoping to have at least 5 speakers signed up.

Join the Friends starting at 9 AM Wednesday, December 6th in Council Chambers, 1500 Marilla, 6th Floor, 75201. Wear red if you have it. Friends staff will be there with "I Love the Library" pins and stickers for all to wear to show support.

Take to social media, post about your unwavering support for our library, and tag and . Use the hashtag .

Thank you for being the steadfast advocates our libraries deserve. Your time and commitment today will be the catalyst for a brighter, more accessible future for the Dallas Public Library.

In October, the Oak Lawn Library Friends board (OLLF) committed $1900 for new books for the library. The library staff was able to buy about $1560 thru DPL vendors. I placed the order for about $340. The books should begin arriving next week to be sent downtown to be cataloged on the shelves early in 2024.
