UPDATE: The Polk County Extreme Temperature Plan will be deactivated on Tuesday, July 16.

The Polk County Extreme Temperature Plan will be activated on July 12, 2024, based on forecast temperatures from the National Weather Service.
Activation of the plan includes:
●weather amnesty at area homeless shelters,
●activation of cooling/warming centers, and
●free access to these locations on DART buses.

The end date will be determined and published when we have the date. DART will be providing free rides to the center.

PSA: The City of Des Moines Municipal Housing Agency (DMMHA) is "opening the waiting list for the Public Housing rental assistance program located in Des Moines, Iowa for 2, 3, 4, and 5 bedroom units (Family sizes larger than 2 people) From June 17, 2024 at 8 AM through August 17, 2024 5 PM

ONLY PAPER APPLICATIONS ARE BEING ACCEPTED – Applications can be picked up at their Administrative Office located on 2309 Euclid Ave. OR can be printed from the City of DSM website https://bit.ly/3KCwVY5 OR by mail - call 515-323-8950

*The waitlist for Royal View Manor remains open (families size 2 people or less)
**Section 8 wait list remains closed.

If special accommodations or assistance is required due to a disability, request the necessary accommodation by contacting 515-323-8950. A TDD machine is available. DMMHA also offers the Language Line for people needing interpretation services."

IMPACT Community Action Partnership continues to accept applications for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) through April 30, 2024.

Families in Boone, Jasper, Marion, Polk or Warren counties interested in applying for LIHEAP should call 515-518-4770 to schedule an appointment by phone, by a home visit, or on site at an IMPACT location. Households may request an application to be mailed to them or visit www.impactcap.org/energyassistance to apply.

While road conditions have improved, some routes are still running slower than usual to stay safe. We will continue to make updates to ridedart.com/winter-delays throughout the evening.

Temps will be dipping well below freezing tonight and Polk County Emergency Management Agency, Iowa has activated their Extreme Temperature Plan. We'll begin to provide free rides to and from Polk County warming centers starting tomorrow, Jan. 10, at 12 p.m. and continue to do until temperatures rise above freezing.
