Polk County Treasurer Mary L. Wells was honored as a 2023 ‘Woman of Influence’ by the Des Moines Business Record. This recognition is bestowed on women who have made a sizeable contribution to our community through their chosen profession, volunteer commitments, leadership, resilience and subsequent impact on the lives of others.

Mary grew up in Des Moines, proudly served in the Army National Guard, married, and raised a family in Des Moines. Her determination to see youth succeed extends beyond her own family, leading her to co-found Investing In My Future, Inc. in 2010, a non-profit supporting educational aspirations and career pathways for children in 4th through 12th grades.

The drive to do more through hard work and tenacity resulted in Mary Wells’ appointment as Polk County Treasurer and subsequent election in 2021. As the first black woman elected to this role in the County and State, Mary continues to blaze a path by challenging the process, encouraging continuous development, leading by example and remaining rooted in service to others.

Congratulations to Mary and all of the inspiring honorees!
