What are the advantages and disadvantages of burning firewood as fuel? Scott Salveson's answer: The primary advantage is that it works in situations no other fuel does. Extended power outage, no problem — you keep warm, can cook food, and boil water. Essential requirements for long-term survival. Absent a crisis, it’s a local fuel source. No long-distance transport...

Smoke pouring out of a chimney should be equated to a huge sign above your house that says "I'm a du***ss."

Wood smoke is unburned fuel -- wasted heat. It is the equivalent of a car dribbling gasoline out of the tailpipe. An pleasant and unnecessary waste of natural resources that pollutes our environment.

Get Good Wood this Winter 04/03/2019

This is a fantastic program. There's not a single thing more important than making sure your wood is dry enough to burn properly. Note that the figure they cite as acceptable is 25% moisture content.

Ideally, it would be 20% or less, but 25% is "pretty close enough" given the voluntary nature of the program and the difficulty in getting a precise reading with a moisture meter. (The only way to achieve true accuracy is to weigh the wood, then bake out all the moisture until it stops getting lighter and compare the difference in mass).

Get Good Wood this Winter Hawke's Bay Regional Council's Good Wood scheme is good news for both homeowners wanting to keep warm this winter and for merchants selling a reliable, low-pollution product.

Our newest member. Welcome, Joshua!

Cowboys Firewood is proud to announce that we are a member of the National Firewood Association.
Our goal from an industry standpoint is to work, at least in this region, to try to bring firewood out of the backyard and into the mainstream as a reputable industry. We try to set the bar for uniform quality and quantity standards for everything from firewood to kindling to smoker woods.
For far too long, firewood has been seen as a backyard hack job for people who can't get a "real" job, and need beer money or dope money.
I get it all the time. People hear I sell firewood, and they think they have found a drinking buddy; or they figure I can't p*e clean for a "real job"! They are shocked to find out I have never drank, never touched drugs, left a full time job for this business, regularly turn down jobs, and that I put in more hours than most people do with a "real job"! The unfortunate part is that there are far too many who just use firewood as a means of funding bad habits.
I hear many talk about poor quality firewood and short loads getting delivered. To that end, I try to educate buyers on both quality and quantity. An educated buyer is less likely to be scammed by an unscrupulous seller.
Government standards for firewood are 128 cu.ft stacked/180 cu.ft loose measurements for a cord of firewood, and fractions thereof. Product quality in any industry speaks for itself. The key is to produce a quality product and blend, price it to reflect it's value, and it will sell itself.
In this way, both as producers and as buyers, we can improve the Firewood in this region.

Stopped by Great Northern Firewood (Duluth, MN) for a Hakki Pilke demo. One guy drove up from Missouri (with a trailer) just to see the machines.

What really stands out about these processors is the quality of the wood they produce. In Europe firewood is graded (kind of like beef). Grade A is top hardwoods, clean, and meeting pretty strict specifications. Every piece must be cut to within 1" of specified length to be Grade A. It also has to be clean.

Grades B and C have their own definitions, according to species (weight, really), size and appearance. Wood is priced accordingly.

Freezing to death is also very bad for your health. You'd be a fool to move away from firewood in these uncertain times, _especially_ if your income is limited.

Two things need to happen:

1. We can do a better job burning wood. A stove that smokes excessively is most likely burning wet wood or operated by someone not qualified to do so.

2. Critics need to recognize that firewood fuel is a matter of life and death for many families. A power outage at -20 below can become a tragedy within hours.

Wood smoke is bad for you, but we live in a world of assumable risks. We'd keep everyone far safer if we didn't drive cars, too, but our country is based on mobility. The argument for firewood is stronger than the argument for cars.

Need proof? Look at war-torn Europe during after after WWII. Nearly half the vehicles were converted to run on firewood (through a gasifier) because fuel delivery had been interrupted. In such an environment, firewood also allows for cooking and boiling water, melting snow where there is no clean water available. Try that with your high-efficiency natural gas furnace burning whatever you can scavenge from the countryside.

Furthermore, there's a lot of waste wood that gets burned because otherwise it is a fire hazard. It would burn far cleaner in the dirtiest stove than it does in a pile burned green. You can't address air quality without recognizing that to prohibit burning would result in piles and piles of extremely flammable materials.

Finally, it has to be understood that forests, if left to grow on their own, will never return to the state they were in 150 years ago, and they require remediation efforts to reverse the effect that the original logging and subsequent plantings have had. The forest is best understood as a garden, and leaving it to be taken over by weeds perhaps isn't the best way to use our renewable natural resources.

Editorial: Fired up over wood stoves Our last Question of the Week – “Do you consider smoke from wood stoves to be a nuisance?” – irked some of our readers. Perhaps “irk” isn’t a strong enough word, because “nuisance” certainly wasn’t. . .

Our Story

The National Firewood Association was founded in 2012 to promote and protect the practice of burning wood in the U.S.

The most important aspect of firewood often goes unspoken -- the fact that it is the most reliable and attainable fuel source on earth. Plenty of people are talking about how to stop climate change. We’re talking about how to survive the power outages, infrastructure failures and service interruptions that are already happening due to extreme weather events.

Firewood is not a viable fuel for densely-populated urban centers -- but it is the best choice in renewable fuels for millions of American homes and businesses. It is locally sourced, “organically” grown, and minimally refined. Revenue generated from trade stays in the area. It provides jobs for thousands in economically depressed rural communities.

If there is a downside to firewood it is that, as a nation, we are not very good at using it. A clean fire doesn’t smoke or smell. Wood smoke pollution wouldn’t be an issue if so many people didn’t do such a poor job burning it, and the firewood industry itself is as much to blame as the consumer.

The good news is that -- as many of you reading this know -- it doesn’t take much to do it right. A little education goes a long way. The goal of the NFA is to get wood burners, consumers, and firewood producers/vendors all on the same page.

We have a list of demands.
