November is National Diabetes. We here at Hillcrest PT and Wellness want to remind those that if you have diabetes, being active makes your body more sensitive to insulin (the hormone that allows cells in your body to use blood sugar for energy), which helps manage your diabetes. Physical activity also helps control blood sugar levels and lowers your risk of heart disease and nerve damage. Let us know how you can reach your health and fitness goals!
Have you ever been curious about how to dispose of expired prescription medication? Today October 29th is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day and it is a great day to educate yourself about safe disposal techniques. If you need a place to get started stop by the clinic! We keep free DETERRA drug deactivation systems which are available to all.
Make no bones about it, World Osteoporosis Day on October 20, is the time to learn about osteoporosis. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia. Research has shown that during weight-bearing activity, the muscles and tendons apply tension to the bones, which stimulates the bones to produce more bone tissue. As a result, bones become stronger and more dense and the risk of osteopenia, osteoporosis, and fractures decreases. Let us show you how to get involved in weight bearing activities!

Today is National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day!
Fibromyalgia is an often misunderstood diagnosis. It is defined as a condition that causes pain all over the body, sleep problems, fatigue, and often emotional and mental distress. One of the best treatments for Fibromyalgia is aerobic and strength training exercises. If you suffer with Fibromyalgia and are struggling with how to get moving again let us help you get back on track with your exercise goals.
Happy National Foam Rolling Day!
In recent years foam rolling has exploded in popularity however oftentimes we find patients are hesitant to use their new purchase. We would like to take a moment to answer two of the most common questions we get from patients
How long should I foam roll? Many people make the mistake of rolling over muscles too quickly when foam rolling. One Tip to slow yourself down is to move no more than 1 inch per second. This allows your muscles to adapt and relax with the pressure. Focus on each muscle for approximately 20-30 seconds.
What is the best time to foam roll? Post workout is the most effective as the gradual pressure on the muscle tissue helps the nervous system recover, flushes lymphatic pooling and drives fresh nutrient rich blood to local area allowing for quicker recovery the next day
