This summer, the Metallurgy department hosted Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) students for a one-week material science workshop. Throughout the week the students had a different activity where they learned basics of metallurgy and materials science along with accompanying disciplines such as chemistry, physics, and more. The students had to complete the task given to them individually or as a team. We are always excited to host youth programs and share our knowledge of metallurgy and material science in a fun and exciting way to inspire future engineers and scientists!

Special thank you to Polette Cortez for hosting a NASA/JPL day with the students and to the Sun City Summit Rocket Team for their support and contribution.

This past Saturday the MMBME Department hosted the Zach White Elementary STEAM Club for some fun hands on engineering activities. The students learned about ceramics by making their own glass ampules. They tested the load capabilities of their composite beams made from laffy taffy! And finally, got to see some of our foundry TA’s cast with aluminum. We hope to have inspired some future materials engineers! Go Miners!

Last Friday , students from the UTEP MMBME department participated in an outreach event with Riverside High School (RHS) welding students. The RHS students taught UTEP students how to MIG weld two types of joints. UTEP students will take these welds back to the MMBME labs and perform NDE, metallography and chemical analysis. In November, the RHS students will visit UTEP, tour the labs, participate in a casting session, and see the microstructure of their welds.

Hopefully, this is the beginning of many collaborations between the RHS welding classes and the UTEP Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Program. The MMBME department would like to thank RHS, Mr. Velazquez and the very talented high school students for their hospitality and time.

Go Miners!
