Welcome to our newest faculty member, Dr. Jaeho Jang! Check out the new faculty story on our website www.utep.edu/chs/kinesiology/
Happy Friday, CHS Miners! ⛏ This fall, several new faculty are joining the College of Health Sciences, across different programs. We're pleased to share the first of several profiles, featuring Dr. Jaeho Jang, assistant professor of Kinesiology. Full story at www.utep.edu/chs
# # #
Like many of his peers, Dr. Jaeho Jang was struck by the beauty of the UTEP campus when he first arrived for his on-site interview earlier this year. Jang, who is originally from South Korea, said he was happy to see the Asian influences dotted throughout the campus while he was moving from one appointment to the next.
During his on-site visit, Jang was also impressed by the warmth of those he met, particularly the faculty, and cites this as one of the major reasons he chose to begin his academic career in El Paso. He turned down a job offer from a university with a larger faculty so that he could also take advantage of the resources UTEP offers for beginning faculty looking to build their research labs.
“UTEP offered more opportunities for me to pursue my research, including funding programs that support new faculty and opportunities to collaborate,” he said.
During his first year at UTEP, Jang aims to publish the three papers that comprised his dissertation, and will also apply for a small pilot grant to help kickstart his lab activities, which will focus on the impact of long-term ankle instability. He will begin recruiting master’s students next spring to begin in his lab in fall 2024.
In addition to building his laboratory, Jang hopes to hone his teaching skills and identify best practices. He will be teaching biomechanics in the Department of Kinesiology. He plans to incorporate different activities in order to lighten up the otherwise “dry” topic.
“Biomechanics is a combination of physics and anatomy and physiology. Most students, in general, don’t like math,” he said. “But I really don’t want students to give up. I plan to add hands-on practice and have them use lab equipment to gather their own data, so they can have more fun and enjoy the class.”
To learn more about Dr. Jang’s research, please email him at [email protected]

Happy Wednesday, Miners! ⛏ Today, we’re celebrating good news from the MiNER Lab, directed by Dr. Sudip Bajpeyi, regarding an important publication available now in Frontiers in Endocrinology, entitled “Effects of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation on Glycemic Control: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.”
Former lab member and current IHS PhD program student Michael Sanchez is first author on the manuscript. The publication is based on his masters thesis project in Kinesiology and is an extension of work first begun by Kinesiology graduate and former MiNER Lab member Michelle Galvan. The writing and review team surmounted several obstacles, most notably the COVID-19 pandemic, to achieve their goal of publication.
Congratulations to Michael and the entire team, including Kinesiology MS graduates and former MiNER Lab members Michelle Galvan, Ali Mossayebi, and Solmaz Sigaroodi; current IHS PhD program student and MiNER Lab member Jehu Apaflo; and Drs. Kisuk Min, Amy Wagler, Frank Agullo, and Sudip Bajpeyi.

Congratulations, Audrey!

Our next Outstanding Senior is Audrey Sanchez who is graduating in August with a B.S. in Kinesiology! During her time in the Kinesiology program, Audrey volunteered at Spectrum Therapy Consultants Clinic, assisting patients in completing their rehabilitation exercises under the guidance of the staff, and for the food pantries at Abundant Living Faith and Kelly Hunger Relief Center. One of her most memorable experiences was a maymester abroad in Seville, Spain. It was here that Audrey’s eyes were opened to the importance of interprofessional collaboration in research and clinical practice.
Following graduation, Audrey hopes to open a nutritional meal prep business in El Paso, providing healthy meals at an affordable price and sharing her knowledge about the importance of a healthy lifestyle to disease prevention. Long-term, Audrey pans to apply to a doctor of physical therapy program and become a licensed physical therapist.
Visit utep.edu/chs to read more about Audrey’s accomplishments! ⛏️
Congratulations, Michelle! ⛏

Our next Outstanding Senior is Michelle Castaneda who is graduating this May with a B.S. in Kinesiology! Michelle’s most cherished extracurricular experience as a Kinesiology student was participating in the Student Bowl at the 2023 Texas Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine. She firmly believes that the universe rewards action. The grueling experience of first being considered for a spot on the team, and then preparing for and competing at the event, ultimately yielded opportunities for her to network with scientists and doctors in her field. She says that the knowledge she gained while at TACSM will benefit the lives of those she will touch in her future profession. Following graduation, Michelle plans to complete a certification as an exercise physiologist and prepare for an application to the UTEP Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program. Congratulations, Michelle! ⛏️

A message from President Heather Wilson:
Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer and all that comes with it – cookouts, vacations, longer days and a slower pace.
But we also set aside the last Monday in May to remember the individuals who died serving their country.
Today, I encourage you to reflect on the sacrifices of family, friends and others who did not come home to their loved ones. We will always be grateful to them.
