Let them sniff!♥️🐾
Here's one thing you can do right now to make your dog’s life even better than it already is: let them sniff! Walking your dog provides physical exercise, but letting them sniff along the way will provide your dog with mental exercise and stimulation, too. Not only is sniffing important to your dog, but it is essential for your dog’s wellbeing. Studies have also shown that olfactory stimulation lowers a dog’s heart rate and reduces stress levels. Next time you take your dog out, we encourage you to slow down and let your dog "smell the roses" and other epic scents on their walk!

Urgent: Medical Foster Needed for Sweet Ava!
Meet Ava, a 1-year-old yellow lab who is just the sweetest girl on earth! Ava came to us from our friends at the shelter when they learned she had some medical issues that we could help with. Ava is easygoing, joyful, and full of love. Every greeting is met with full body wiggles and the sweetest smile. She gets along beautifully with other dogs and has quickly won the hearts of everyone she's met. She is potty trained, kennel trained and has some great training foundations already!
Ava is at the tail end of her recovery for her eye surgery and spay, but she is scheduled to have more surgery soon! She is going in for a TPLO this week and is going to need someone there for her while she’s on medical crate rest.
**Why Foster Ava?**
- Experience the unconditional love of a wonderful dog
- Provide a safe and nurturing environment for Ava as she heals
- Enjoy the company of an easygoing and joyful companion
-Taking her in as a foster saves two! Bringing her into your home allows us to have another spot for other dogs in need
**Ava’s Ideal Foster Home:**
- A safe and comfortable space
- Gentle care and attention during her recovery
- Lots of love and affection
- Low activity at first but a guaranteed cuddler and playbuddy after recovery
If you can open your home and heart to Ava during her recovery, please contact us. She deserves a safe, comfortable and loving spot to recover in after her surgery.
**Ava’s procedure is estimated to be over $1000! If you would like to help sponsor this sweet girl, we are accepting donations to go towards her surgery. Please call Aurora Animal Hospital and mention GRRF and Ava to donate directly to Ava’s cause!
Help Ava get back on her paws with the care and attention she needs

If you are looking for a lovely lab Ava is your girl. She is having knee surgery next week, but that has kept her from being a loving lab. If you are looking for a buddy she is your girl! If interested in meeting her please let us know.
Update: Ava is still looking for a foster home. Just to update everyone, she will be having knee surgery.
Say Hello to Ava!
Ava is just over a year old. This beautiful sweet lab is looking for a foster home. She has some medical issues we are going to be taking care of and she will need a quiet place to rest and recover. If you are interested in fostering her for us please reach out. We provide everything need.
We have seen this in our rescue too. All recovered with diet change.
Yesterday we had two wonderful Golden Retrievers, ages 6 and 2, come in for elective surgical procedures. Both dogs had a history of eating a well-known and popular grain free diet for several years. In one dog, an arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) was detected so an x-ray of his chest was taken. His heart was enlarged, so an echocardiogram was scheduled for that afternoon. An x-ray was also taken of the other dog's chest as a precaution, and his heart was also enlarged. He was able to get an echocardiogram same day, as well.
The reports on both dogs just came back, and both of these gorgeous, otherwise perfectly healthy dogs have Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The cardiologist suspects that in both cases it is related to their diet. Thankfully, this condition was caught early, and when fed a traditional diet, their condition should hopefully reverse. Their cases are being reported to the FDA, along with the thousands of others from across the country.
There is no evidence to support feeding grain-free. Most pet allergies are related to environment (pollens, etc) or protein sources. Grain allergies account for a tiny fraction of all food allergies in dogs. Unfortunately, many dogs are becoming very ill or even dying from eating so-called "BEG" diets (boutique, exotic, grain-free), and the terrible thing is nutritionally mediated dilated cardiomyopathy is 100% preventable. There have been zero reported cases of NMDCM in dogs eating foods that meet WSAVA guidelines, currently made by Purina, Hill's, Iams/Eukanuba, or Royal Canin. We strongly suggest if you are feeding a "BEG" diet that you change your dog over to one of the brands listed above. If you have any questions specifically related to your pet, please call us.
We are so hopeful we caught this disease in time for our two beautiful patients to reverse their disease. Their very caring and dedicated owners have already changed their diet to one that meets WSAVA criteria. The articles below will help explain this disease, WSAVA guidelines, and why grain-free was more marketing than science.

Meet Paisley, the lovable 1-year-old large yellow lab on a mission to find her forever home. Paisley found her way to GRRF from the shelter and she is the epitome of a great dog - sweet, affectionate, and bursting with typical labrador enthusiasm. Her happy-go-lucky nature and fun energy make her a joy to be around, and her eagerness to please and food motivation make her a dream to train.
Paisley's love knows no bounds - she adores everyone and everything she meets, truly embodying the spirit of optimism. While she may be a little energetic at times, Paisley's heart is as big as her personality. She's delightful and sweet, but a basic obedience class will help her polish her manners and channel her exuberance in the right direction.
With crate and potty training already mastered, Paisley is primed and ready to settle into her forever home. If you're looking for a loving, goofy, and endlessly entertaining companion, look no further than Paisley. She's waiting to fill your days with laughter, love, and tail wags galore!
You can apply for Paisley at GRRF.org or if you already have an application on file you can send us a message to have it moved over for review.

Seven has a great time running around with the other dogs here, and she's a master at playtime with proper introductions. With her goofy and bouncy nature, Seven is sure to bring endless joy and laughter to your home. Dublin is available for adoption again. He does great with kids. Reason for him coming back is he was having a rough time getting along with the cats in the house, because of this he needs to be in a home without cats. Dublin would also need to be an only dog in the home. If you can provide what he is looking for and would love to have a cuddly guy please apply at GRRF.org or send us a message if you have an application on file.
Luna is still looking for her forever home. She is such a sweet girl looking for a place to call her own. She loves to play fetch and loves to cuddle up on the couch. If you are looking for a hiking buddy this summer she is your girl! With proper introductions she can get along with other dogs. Just takes a while for her to feel comfortable. If interested please apply at GRRF.org or send us a message and we can set up a time for you to come meet her.
