MSLS Student Profile: Jeremiah Hines
Q: What sparked your interest in health care/your field?
A: Having grown up with asthma and being overweight, I endured some health challenges that I wanted to cease and prevent. I began a health journey that has led me to where I am now. Now I am a wellness coordinator for Select Rehabilitation and a master’s student for HSC’s Personalized Health and Well-Being and coaching program.
Q: Can you briefly describe what brought you to HSC?
A: I heard of HSC through being a student at TCU while looking at my next steps in life.
Q: What have been the most rewarding/challenging parts of your experience so far?
A: The challenging part of my experience that has become rewarding is being able to manage a full-time job and paying rent for my apartment while being a student. I just graduated from TCU in December 2023 and now I am able to work, move into my first apartment, and go to school. I see the improvement of being able to manage my time more efficiently, and I am so grateful for the challenges I have.
Q: How are you feeling about the online format?
A: I really like online format. I am used to the online format back when Covid 19 was prevalent, and the world was all online.
Q: What are your plans after graduation?
A: My plan after graduation is to get admitted into a Physical Therapy program and get my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Eventually, own my own practice.
Q: What else should people know about you?
A: I am a big brother, a son who cannot stop the urge to sit down at a piano and play it. I love to cook and exercise. I try to be a person of integrity.

Nursing’s role in lifestyle medicine Lifestyle medicine addresses the root causes of chronic diseases. Nurses are well positioned to encourage therapeutic lifestyle interventions.
We live in a world that constantly discusses self-care and “treating yourself.” To most, self-care is a walk in the park to destress, a bubble bath after a long day at work, a trip to the spa after getting an A on an exam, or dinner at your favorite restaurant just because you made it through the week. But is it more than simply treating yourself?
Cynthia Powell, an assistant professor in the Department of Personalized Health and Well-Being at The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth, emphasizes that self-care is not merely a fleeting trend; rather, it is essential for overall well-being and Whole Health.
Whole health focus: Self-care is more than a trend Cynthia Powell, an assistant professor at HSC emphasizes that self-care is essential for overall well-being and Whole Health.

Master of Science in Lifestyle Health Sciences & Coaching
At The University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth we are preparing for the future of health care and fulfilling our mission to create solutions for a healthier community. A large body of scientific literature supports a strong relationship between lifestyle habits and health. It is estimated that 70 to 80 percent of chronic disease conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, hypertension, obesity, and some types of cancer are directly attributable to lifestyle behaviors. As a result, 75% of our health care dollars go toward treating these lifestyle-related conditions. This model of care is not sustainable. Therefore, there is a growing demand for providers who can cost-effectively address lifestyle behaviors to promote sustainable change for optimal health and well-being.
The Department of Lifestyle Health Sciences is filling this gap by bringing together an interprofessional team to develop innovative, educational programs and research endeavors that focus on merging evidence-based lifestyle medicine with National Board for Health and Wellness Coaches (NBHWC) coaching competencies. Our graduates will have foundational knowledge and skills that will prepare them to empower others to mobilize internal strengths and external resources in order to achieve true self-care reform.
