Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating and celebrating the end of slavery in the US. While the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, it took time for the news to reach all parts of the country. It wasn't until Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, that the enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom.
We are closed today for Juneteenth.
