Step into the world of cinematography with Andrew Lococo, DP at Red Productions!

Andrew’s worked on just about every kind of film shoot you can imagine, from food to clothing brands to films, TV shows and commercials.

Learn more about his experiences with this excerpt from his video interview for the Fort Worth Film Collaborative:

▪️How did you get started in the film industry?
“My first gig in the industry back in 2015 was a PA, which is a Production Assistant. It’s a crew position where you’re helping anyone that needs help, from the director to grip and electric guys to the camera department. It’s a catch all position that does anything and everything.”

▪️Favorite project?
“One of my favorite projects I’ve ever worked on was at a studio in DFW. We were shooting for Chick-fil-a: a chicken sandwich, nuggets and fries. At that point I was still growing into the camera department, and just to see how much time and effort went into making a singular nugget look good on camera was crazy. -That was my first food shoot. Then we got to use a really high speed camera that would shoot at 2000 frames per second, and it just looked beautiful. It’s digital artwork with food. Is there a better combination?”

▪️Favorite part about working in the industry?
“My favorite aspect of my job and my role is the crew. Doing what we do, we get to meet so many amazing people. You may have friends that you see on the same job and you get to work together again and again. You’re going to meet new people… some that are just starting out in the industry that are going to be full of questions, and then you’ll have a seasoned gaffer that is just the smartest person on set. It’s fascinating, all the walks of life that come through a crew. Without a doubt that’s my favorite part of production.”

As VP of Development at MPS Studios, Meredith Stephens is responsible for making magic happen for production companies. Learn more about her work with projects filming in DFW and the opportunities she sees for our community:

▪️What is MPS Studios?
“MPS Studios is a vendor for production companies that are creating content: primarily commercials, movies and TV shows. We’re renting the cameras, lighting, grip, electric equipment and sound stages to production companies. [Recently, we’ve worked with] 1883 and Lawmen: Bass Reeves, and we do a lot of student projects.”

▪️What do you love about your job and the film industry?
“For my job, I love the logistics and the puzzle pieces that we have to put together. Often clients will come to us with an idea of what they want to do but they need a little help figuring out the equipment and how to make it happen, so we really like the logistics part of that…

I love working in this industry mostly for the people … We work with really great people that have good hearts and are very smart, strategic and creative.”

▪️What kinds of job opportunities are available in the film industry in DFW?
“In DFW there is a lot of opportunity in lighting, grip and electric departments right now. There’s also opportunity in makeup and wardrobe as well as the art department. If you’re really wanting to work in the production office or learn more about accounting there’s a lot of opportunity right now.”

Meredith’s full interview is available to students of the Fort Worth Film Collaborative.

As founder of Red Productions and Backlot Studio, Red Sanders is helping to shape the growing Fort Worth film industry 🎬

▶️ Why Fort Worth?

“I grew up in Grapevine and went to TCU. All my friends moved to LA and New York with their film degrees and I thought, hey, it’d be fun to stay and plant a flag in Fort Worth and see what we could grow here. That was 18 years ago and Fort Worth’s continued growing.”

“I’m so thrilled I stayed because we have such a community here that cares about growing the creative class, and that’s across the board from the Mayor and City Hall to the Film Commission, to other arts groups here and businesses that want to work with local companies. The fun thing now is all those friends that moved off to LA and New York, many of them are moving back because they realize that it’s pretty hard to raise a family out there.”

“A lot of times people think LA is the center of the industry. It is where a lot of the deals are made, but most of the movies aren’t shot there. They go where the incentives are and where there’s a creative workforce. It’s exciting to see that growing here… You can stay in Fort Worth now, work in this industry and make a good living.”

“I quickly learned what a great collaborative industry it is. It’s never one person who does everything. It takes a lot of different talents and trades and craft skills to bring everything together.”

Red’s full interview is available to students through the new Fort Worth Film Collaborative.

Scrims, flags, bounces, nets, dolly, jib – just some of the lingo used in a Grip Department!

Richard Porter is Key Grip extraordinaire with a long extensive list of credits including , , , and more.

What is a Grip Department?
“The grip department works in conjunction with the cinematographer for both lighting needs as well as camera needs. We shape the light, whether manufactured or available (like the sun). We also provide all support for the camera’s movement. Because of both of those, we’re involved in safety because of all that rigging and movement.”

What do you love about working as a Key Grip?
“My favorite part about being a key grip is the different functions that we perform. It’s having more than one thing to focus on. I like the challenge of not just thinking about lighting… I wanted to be involved with the camera department, I wanted to be involved in safety, I wanted to have conversations with stunts and special effects to be a useful jack of all trades, which many of us Grips are. I like to have more than one challenge on my plate.”

Tips for Getting Started?
“Watch your favorite movies and tv shows and look for the types of lighting that you like. When you start learning the actual process of doing it, you’ll have an idea of what it is that you’re doing and able to identify looks that you’re trying to attain.
“And… practice your knots!”

You don’t get a nickname like “Radar” by resting on your laurels. Lisandra Montes has worked on set for multiple productions around Fort Worth, proving her worth by anticipating problems and needs. She sat down with the Fort Worth Film Collaborative to tell us more about her experiences as a Director’s Assistant and Props PA. Spoiler alert: no two days are ever the same.

Why Fort Worth?

“Fort Worth was the first time I did a big job, I got to work on The Senior as a director’s assistant. That’s when I really started seeing just how many projects were coming to Fort Worth and how big it really was. I’ve met a lot of nice people here and I’ve been seeing it grow for years now.”

Favorite aspect of the job?

“I’ve always loved film. So I think just being on set, even if it’s a day that’s really hectic, I would feel really de-stressed when I would get to see the narrative stuff, and get to see all the sets and all the input that goes into it. Seeing the final product is amazing, being part of the art and making of film.”

Weirdest day on set?

“One time I had to get really bloody guts, so I ran into an HEB and said, ‘Hey can you give me the bloodiest meat that you have?’ And I looked like a crazy person because I was just putting it all in the cart. But they were going to film something very gruesome so I had to do it.”

Lisandra has built an extensive resume, working on projects like Lawmen: Bass Reeves, Spy Kids Armageddon, and a variety of high-profile commercials in just 3 years.

Her full interview is available to students through the Fort Worth Film Collaborative. Visit tccd.college/film to learn more and register

Keep up the great work, Lisandra! 🎬

Juan Romero knows his way around a film set! He’s worked in the electric department on the original Dallas TV series, Walker, Texas Ranger, House of Cards and many more. After over 45 years in the film industry (and no signs of slowing down), he’s given invaluable insight and advice to students of the new Fort Worth Film Collaborative.

“My favorite part of the job is showing up to work. Every job is different. I’ve been doing this for such a long time, but even to this day I still get that little nervousness in my stomach because it’s going to be a new experience. I’m going to be working with people that I haven’t worked with before, along with people I’ve worked with for many years. But I still get excited. To me it’s not a job. It’s always a pleasure coming to work. You’re going to do something that’s creative and rewarding.”

We’re grateful to have Juan in DFW and inspiring many to choose a career path as a gaffer 🎬
