Since we have Mariachi here at SHHS, you might be interested to know about this!
This week, The Library of Congress announced the induction of "The Very First Mariachi Recordings (1908-1909)" by the Cuarteto Coculense into the National Recording Registry.
Recorded in Mexico City shortly before the Mexican Revolution, this album presents the earliest recordings of mariachi music and offers us a peek into an era when mariachi music was still an obscure, regional style. It is the oldest of 25 recordings in this year's class of inductees, which include Bobbie Gentry, Queen Latifah, Madonna, Koji Kondo's Super Mario Bros. theme, and more.
This album was released by Arhoolie Records in 1998 and can be found in the Smithsonian Folkways catalog with historical liner notes on our website.
