Scars are a totally normal part of the healing process as your body works its magic to close up wounds with collagen. 🙌

You might get scars from things like:

⚡ C-sections
⚡ Hip replacement or labral tear repair
⚡ Episiotomies or tears during childbirth
⚡ Abdominal surgeries (even the tiny laparoscopy ones)
⚡ Breast reduction, mastectomy or lumpectomy
⚡ Gender-affirming surgeries like vaginoplasty, phalloplasty or metoidioplasty

As you heal, the collagen in your scar needs to realign and get back to its flexible, strong self. But sometimes, too much collagen forms or layers of skin, fascia, muscles, and organs stick together, causing pain or discomfort.

Although scar tissue feels thick and tough, it's actually weaker than the original tissue. Manual therapy provided by pelvic PT helps address these concerns and reduce dysfunction, adhesions, pain, and improve mobility.

At Indigo, our manual therapy pro’s are experts at helping your scar tissue realign, easing pain, and getting your strength and motion back. 💪

During our one-on-one sessions, we use hands-on techniques and teach you how to keep up the good work at home.

If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort around a scar, no matter how old, come and learn more about how we can help. Visit the link in our bio to find your nearest Indigo clinic, or send us a DM if you have any questions!

Did you know that kegels aren't always the golden ticket for your pelvic floor prep? 🤷‍♀️

Kegels are NOT a one-size-fits-all solution. In fact, for many pregnant people, solely focusing on kegels may actually cause more harm than good. Why? Because childbirth isn't just about pelvic floor strength – it's about flexibility, relaxation, and coordination too.

Picture this: Your pelvic floor is like a team of superheroes, each muscle playing a crucial role in supporting your baby's journey into the world. Now, imagine if only one muscle is doing all the heavy lifting. Sounds exhausting, right? 👀

That's where a holistic approach to pelvic floor prep comes in. Instead of just kegels, we incorporate a variety of techniques – from gentle stretches to mindful breathing – to ensure your pelvic floor is in its best shape for childbirth.

So, if you're getting ready for delivery day, ditch the Kegels-only approach and look for balance instead. Trust us, your pelvic floor will thank you later! 💪

If you’re like most people, you may not get the image of young, athletic people when someone ask you to think about incontinence un**es or liners. 👀

It might come as a real surprise that urinary incontinence is, in fact, super common
among physically active people such as athletes. Even in those who have never experienced childbirth or injury before!

If it’s this common, it must be a normal part of being an athlete, right?! Not quite. There are many athletes out there who do not struggle with urinary incontinence at all, just like there are a lot of non-athletes who do.

Being fit doesn’t guarantee that you’ll have strong pelvic floor muscles when it comes to bladder control. There may be a lot of other factors at play here that can cause your pelvic floors to weaken, such as an underlying medical condition, the lack of proper recovery after birth or forgotten injuries.

On the other hand, if your pelvic floor muscles are super active all the time, it can be just as problematic. An overactive or hypertonic pelvic floor reduces muscle function and their ability to “squeeze” at the right time.

If you have core imbalances, or if you struggle to activate your pelvic floor when you exercise, you may also notice urine leakage when you do explosive exercises such as powerlifting. (We’ve all seen that video, right?) Your pelvic might be heavily overworked and in need of some care.

Hold on, shouldn’t repeated activation and exercises strengthen your pelvic floor rather than weaken it? While these can definitely make the muscles stronger, it should be done right. 🙌

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is the #1 recommend line of treatment for many kinds of pelvic floor disorders, including incontinence and if you’re an athlete, it’s absolutely one of the most important things you need to incorporate in
your every-day training routine. 👆

In our ongoing coverage of women's empowerment in sports, we got to see Elle St. Pierre absolutely CRUSH it in the 1500m track and field trials this week to make it to the USA Team bound for Paris in just a few short weeks.

There's been an absolutely incredible roster of female athletes inspiring us this week (seeing Sha'Carri Richardson win the 100m finals was a peak life moment for Dr. Sam), but also knowing that some of these women - Elle St. Pierre, Kate Grace, Rachel Schnieder Smith, Abbey Cooper and many others at USATF - filled the stands and our hearts with inspiration as they competed postpartum.

Pregnancy is one of the greatest physiological changes a body can undergo – it literally changes your DNA. However, these folks utilized guts, training, motivation, careful coaching and steady progress to show us all what is possible for women postpartum. You CAN PR postpartum!

This highlights the need for greater support for postpartum recovery, including pelvic physical therapy, more research on sports performance after childbirth, and contracts that allow people to participate in both sport and motherhood, like the work that we are doing at Indigo, and other organizations such as &Mother are working so fiercely to support. 🙌

06/26/2024

On Monday night at the Olympic Trials, we saw something truly inspiring. Elle St. Pierre broke a 24-year-old record in the women’s 5000m final, winning by just .02 seconds! With an incredible time of 14 minutes, 40.34 seconds, she secured her spot on the Olympic team alongside Elise Cranny and Karissa Schweizer.

But here’s the kicker – Elle had her first baby, Ivan, just last year in March 2023! After her big win, she lifted little Ivan up on the track at Hayward Field to celebrate. Talk about a proud mom moment!

“The 5K always hurts, and I just dig a little deeper at the end there,” Elle said to NBC’s Lewis Johnson. “I’m just so emotional to have Ivan here, and I’m really proud to be his mom.”

And Elle isn’t the only super mom out there. Kathryn Schweizer rocked the 1500m finals to make the US Olympic team, and she’s also got a little one under 2. Plus, Emily Enfeld and Kate Grace did an amazing job in the 800m, all while being moms to young kids.

These incredible women show us that being a mom doesn’t mean putting your dreams on hold. It means digging deeper, pushing harder, and finding that extra bit of strength. So, to all the moms out there juggling kiddos and chasing goals, remember: You’ve got this!

Keep pushing, keep dreaming, and keep shining bright. 🌟

There are a lot of heroes out there living every day lives, but our eyes have been all over the Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, OR, watching the women that inspire us to lace up our shoes!

As a lifelong runner, marathoner, and mama, Dr. Sam had the unique privilege to be invited to the trials this week and partner with , and for a special panel speaking to empowerment of female athletes and women in sports.

Sharing the panel with Olympic medalist and &Mother founder Alicia Montano (and mom of 3), Mechelle Lewis Freeman (Olympic medalist and relay coach, founder of Track Girlz), Dr. Sarah Lesko, CEO of Bras on the Run, and Dr. Tiffany Brown and Katie Steele, authors of The Price She Pays and founders of the Athletes Mental Health Foundation.

This empowering panel spoke to the importance of equity, accessibility, and empowerment of women of all ages through sport, regardless of life phase. 🙌

Recently, British model Iskra Lawrence posted photos of herself rocking the runway during Miami Swim Week with her baby bump, and while we think she was absolutely radiating and glowing, she received a ton of really awful comments about her pregnant body.

"I’m still in disbelief that in 2024 and with everything going on in the world that fat shaming a pregnant woman seemed like the best use of your time?," Iskra said in an Instagram post containing screenshots of all the hateful comments she received.

Taking it a step further on her Instagram story, she opened up about how all the negativity only fueled her fire to show up confidently, proving that all bodies are worthy and enough.

It's really heartbreaking to think that pregnant individuals endure body shaming from strangers, medical professionals, and even loved ones on a daily basis. From being told what to eat, how to act, and where they're lacking, the policing of pregnant bodies is all too common. 😕

Let's stop commenting on other people's bodies. Each individual has a unique health care history, relationship with their medical provider, midwife, their other health care practitioners, etc. that the rest of us don't know or understand the nuances behind. Weight changes (regardless in pregnancy or not) is very stigmatized and stressful.

In a society already obsessed with weight, pregnancy only intensifies the scrutiny. And while there are risks associated with higher weight and pregnancy, it's super important to remember that every pregnancy comes with its own set of risks, no matter your weight.

We can do better than this. 🙏

Many people believe that urinary or bowel incontinence is just a "normal" part of motherhood. But here's the truth... Incontinence is a symptom of dysfunction, not a rite of passage for moms. 🤷‍♀️

Incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine or bowel control. This can be incredibly frustrating and embarrassing, but it's important to remember that it's a symptom of an underlying dysfunction that can affect anyone, not just mothers.

Incontinence happens because of a dysfunction in the pelvic floor muscles, which can be caused by:

👆 Childbirth: The physical strain of childbirth can weaken the pelvic floor, and a tear can cause scar tissue, or tension, leading to weakness, but it doesn't mean it is inevitable.

👆 Lactation: In some people, lactating may contribute to thinning (think pain, some weakness) of your pelvic floor tissues - treatable!

👆 Surgery or Injury: Procedures like hysterectomy or injuries can impact pelvic muscle strength or length.

👆 Hormonal Changes: Menopause or hormonal imbalances can affect muscle tone and tension.

👆 Chronic Conditions: Dramatic weight changes, chronic coughing, or constipation can put lots of pressure on your pelvic floor. (As well as heavy lifting without appropriate strength or mechanics!)

👆 Aging: Natural aging processes can weaken or thin pelvic floor muscles over time, but this can be prevented and treated.

You absolutely don’t need to live with it. Incontinence is treatable and often preventable with the right approach.

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a highly effective treatment for both urinary and bowel incontinence. Here’s how it can help:

👆 Strengthening or Stretching Exercises: Targeted exercises can strengthen or lengthen your pelvic floor muscles depending on your personal needs.

👆 Biofeedback: This helps you understand how to control and strengthen your muscles.

👆 Behavioral Strategies: Techniques like bladder training can improve control.

👆 Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques to improve muscle function and alleviate discomfort.

IT'S OUR BIRTHDAY! 🥳

HOLY MOLY has *8* years and *7* locations flown by!

I started Indigo 8 years ago when I realized I couldn’t treat my patients and clients to full healing given the traditional paradigm - I needed them to experience more expertise, more 1-1 time, curated rooms and clinics to meet their varying needs, and prioritize whole-body health, inclusivity, and pelvic floor care beyond “kegels.”

The greatest irony was that I had physicians pulling me aside and saying, “women will never pay for this kind of care.” WELL HELLO DID YOU SHOW UP OR WHAT?

Pelvic floor physical therapy is more than kegels. It’s understanding the nuances of a musculoskeletal and neuromuscular system that works together in our body with pressure and poisoning systems, force loads, myofascial lines, hormones, length- tension relationships, and so much more.

The body is genius and so interconnected: Foot issues relate to pelvic floor, hip and labral tears, low back pain, scar tissue, hormonal dysfunction, pain, mental health… I could go on.

Pelvic floor therapy is a needed mainstay in people’s health care at many different ages across the lifespan regardless of gender, size, sexuality, birthing status, ability. Being continent, functional, strong, pain free and shame free is a necessary health care human right.

Huge shout out to our team of experts, our clinical concierge team, and all of our hard working staff on the back end (no pun intended!) for believing in the mission and showing up every single day to make people’s lives better. And to our clients who make our jobs fun, fill it with laughter, challenge us, and help us spread the word. YOU make it all worth it!

What would be a better way to celebrate our birthday than to announce that our LEESBURG, VA location is coming your way end of 2024! 🙌

- Dr. Sam

Everything in our bodies are interconnected. That‘s why it‘s so important to us to assess your symptoms not only from the powerful lens of the pelvic floor, but also keep in mind that your body works as a whole. 🙌

That means not only evaluating internal and external pelvic floor musculature but taking into account many other factors and areas in the body and how they can play a part in what might be going on in your pelvic region.

For example, did you know that TMJ and IBS can directly impact your pelvic health and vice versa? 👆 Seemingly unrelated conditions like these should always be taken into consideration before a diagnosis is made.

We use a combination of hands-on techniques, neuromuscular reeducation, mobility, strengthening, stretching, and education to help get you back to being your best possible self.

We may also use a variety of tools, such as myofascial tools, cupping, kinesiotaping, and even dry needling, to help you achieve your goals.

But at the end of the day, pelvic floor physical therapy entails YOU and your specific needs. 🌸

Got any questions? Send us a message or book a free 15 minute consultation with one of our doctors of physical therapy. Link in bio!

Super exciting news for Paris 2024! 👏

This summer, athletes participating in the Olympic and Paralympic Games will have access to a specially designed nursery facility in the Olympic Village. Pampers® will supply high-quality diapers, wipes, and a fun, family-friendly environment.

Additionally, P&G is enhancing the Olympic Village experience with various services, including a beauty and grooming salon, laundry rooms, a dental clinic, and complimentary period protection products in the bathrooms.

French athletes who are breastfeeding or lactating will also get rooms in a nearby hotel, not far from the athletes’ village. Normally, kids aren’t allowed in the village where athletes and coaches stay for the duration of the games. This change happened after athletes like French judo star Clarisse Agbegneno, pushed for new moms' needs to be heard and respected by sports authorities.

With these outstanding initiatives, P&G and the IOC are set to support athletes balancing competition and childcare. Let's celebrate these incredible athletes and this historic milestone for the Olympics and moms in sports! 🙌

First thing’s first, incontinence is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. 👆 Incontinence is a misunderstood condition that affects everyone, no matter their age, race, gender or birthing-status. In fact, a recent study revealed that 5% of the entire population suffers from some form of incontinence - that’s approximately 300 million people around the world.

People develop incontinence for a wide variety of reasons. During pregnancy, the expanding uterus can put pressure on the bladder and the muscles of the bladder sphincter, causing your pelvic floor to become weakened and overwhelmed. Childbirth further exacerbates these issues, as the muscles of the pelvic floor may be stretched and weakened during birth.

But women aren't the only ones affected.

Many men experience incontinence due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous condition characterized by prostate enlargement. This enlargement can put pressure on the urethra, leading to urinary symptoms such as frequency, urgency, and leakage.

Complications such as constipation, straining to void, lung pathology, poor lifting mechanics, poor posture or weakness can also contribute to incontinence symptoms in all genders.

We want to empower everyone to seek help, find relief, and live life to the fullest without worrying about pooping or p*eing your pants all the time. 🤷‍♀️

Seriously though, while incontinence can feel super embarrassing and difficult to talk about, it's so important to remember that help is available and that it doesn’t have to be a taboo topic. Pelvic floor physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, and medical interventions can all play a role in managing and improving your symptoms, for good. 🙌

Ever finished p*eing, stood up, and then had a little more urine dribble out? 👀 You’re not alone! This common issue is known as Post-Micturition Dribble (PMD), and it's more common than you might think.

PMD, or "after dribble" can feel annoying and embarrassing, but don’t worry, we’ve got the scoop on why it happens and how to manage it.

PMD is due to weakened pelvic floor muscles that surround your urethra. These muscles can become weak due to several reasons:

👆 Surgeries for an enlarged prostate
👆 Constant straining from constipation
👆 Chronic coughing or other things that increase intra-abdominal pressure rapidly and consistently
👆 Neurological damage
👆 Persistent heavy lifting

Ideally, your pelvic floor muscles help fully empty your bladder. However, if these muscles are weak or too tight, some urine gets left behind. When you stand up, gravity does its thing, and the leftover urine dribbles out. Think of it like pinching a straw with water in it — when you let go, the water comes out.

One common tip is double voiding. 💡 This means after you p*e, you try to relax to let out a little more. If double voiding feels uncomfortable due to tight pelvic floor muscles, there's an alternative method you can try. Instead of pushing harder after you p*e (pushing and straining can make your pelvic floor tighter and work against you!), simply relax, stand up for a few seconds, then sit back down on the toilet and take a few deep breaths. This can help encourage any remaining urine to flow naturally without straining your pelvic muscles or putting unnecessary pressure on your pelvic organs.

If you’re feeling a little unsure about whether you have tight or weakened pelvic floor muscles, seeking help from a pelvic floor physical therapist can make a big difference. We’ll be able to identify any pelvic issues and teach you how to strengthen and relax those important muscles, so you can say hello to better bladder control.

This. This beautiful moment right here marks the beginning of a brand new chapter for you as a mother: Your Postpartum Journey. 🌹

During pregnancy, it’s very normal for people to visit their OB-GYN several times. Yet, they’ll typically only have one visit during the postpartum period.

Talking about postpartum struggles used to be taboo, but now, the conversation is opening up. Search "celebrity postpartum stories" on Google, and you'll find tons of celebrity moms discussing postpartum depression, anxiety, psychosis, and pelvic prolapse.

This normalization is a positive step. However, in our efforts to encourage open discussions about postpartum struggles, we may have accidently accepted these issues as an inevitable part of being a new mother...

But it doesn’t have to be this way, and we’ll die on a hill saying that these issues aren’t and shouldn’t be a normal part of postpartum life. Many postpartum health issues, such as mood disorders, incontinence, and pelvic dysfunction, can be effectively treated, or even prevented. Pelvic floor health issues such as pain during in*******se, leakage and pelvic pain, widely assumed to be “normal” after childbirth, can actually be reduced or prevented with basic pelvic floor muscle training guided by a physical therapist. By overly normalizing postpartum struggles, we've missed the broader discussion on early and preventive care.

Let's shift the narrative. Postpartum health issues are not inevitable, and with the right support and care, they can be prevented. Everyone deserves a healthy, supported postpartum journey. 🙌

Healthcare should be a universal right, but so many q***r folks still face big hurdles when it comes to getting the care they need.

LGBTQIA+ patients in America have a long history of facing discrimination, and sadly, it extends to healthcare too. Negative experiences and biased treatment have kept many from seeking medical attention.

As the LGBTQIA+ community keeps growing, especially among Millennials and Gen Z, inclusive healthcare is more important than ever. These generations have more openly q***r people than any before them and their healthcare needs are only going to grow as they get older.

Recent studies show some serious health disparities:

📌 Gay and bisexual men have a much higher risk of developing skin cancer compared to heterosexual men.
📌 Bisexual women face higher rates of cervical cancer.
📌 Transgender men are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with cancer compared to cisgender men.
📌 Transgender individuals often get diagnosed at later stages and have worse survival rates for various cancers.

Barriers such as fear of discrimination, past negative healthcare experiences and socio-economic issues affect both preventative and essential care, leading to disparities in cancer risk and treatment.

The good news is that education and data for medical professionals about LGBTQIA+ healthcare is growing! Slowly, but surely, but it definitely still needs a lot of work.

This Pride Month, let’s pledge to be better allies in healthcare. By understanding, advocating for change, and providing inclusive care, we can make sure LGBTQIA+ folks get the high-quality healthcare they also deserve. 🙌
