The Frederick County Sheriff's Office is making a change to the uniforms our deputies wear and we want to tell you why.

Watch this video and listen as DFC Bittenmaster and DFC Hall tell you what is new and what the advantages are to this new uniform item.

One particular note not mentioned in the video is the ease of access to get to a deputy if he/she is injured in a particular area of their body.

You can expect to start seeing our deputies wearing this new uniform equipment in the very near future.

On the evening of Nov. 11, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputies became aware of at least two calls to the Maryland State Police of Dodge Chargers racing on Interstate 270 and 70. As the night progressed, the FCSO began to receive multiple calls of vehicles drag racing in the vicinity of Executive Way, New Design Road, and Wedgewood Boulevard.

Those same deputies responded to that area and came across a blue Dodge Charger S**t Pack at the intersection of Maryland 85 northbound and Executive Way. A deputy approached the vehicle from the front, activated his lights, and the vehicle began reversing through traffic, hitting one vehicle as the suspect tried to flee the scene.

Once successfully stopping the vehicle, deputies arrested the driver, Keith Andre Gorham, age 25, of Capitol Heights, Maryland. Deputies transported him to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center for booking.

While the vehicle appeared to be fully registered and showed a valid registration plate, a deputy noticed several discrepancies with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) the vehicle was displaying. The deputy investigated further and found the VIN removed from the frame of the vehicle. Through a thorough investigation, deputies discovered that someone swapped the VIN, and that the vehicle was reported stolen from Highland Park, New Jersey.

Gorham faces 11 different traffic charges and deputies filed for three additional charges on Nov. 26 to include:

• Motor vehicle/Unlawful taking
• Theft - $25,000 to

On Nov. 25, at approximately 10:20 a.m., Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) deputies responded to the Fulton Bank located at 5211 Presidents Court, in Frederick, for a male suspect recognized as committing fraudulent transactions throughout the state of Maryland.

Deputies attempted to detain the male in handcuffs and while they did so a female suspect that was with him fled. One deputy chased after the female suspect at which time the male suspect assaulted the remaining deputy and then fled on foot. Deputies quickly apprehended the female without incident. However, the male ran toward a vehicle parked across the street, to elude deputies, and a deputy had to deploy his taser to stop and apprehend the male.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel responded and evaluated the male suspect on scene. EMS transported him to Frederick Health Hospital (FHH) for further care. Deputies transported the female suspect to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center for booking. Once EMS personnel released the male from FHH, deputies transported him to the Adult Detention Center for booking as well.

At approximately 8 p.m., on Nov. 25, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call for service of a single vehicle, 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle, crash on the 4800 block of Wi******er Boulevard.

John Ryan Coblentz, age 34, of Jefferson, Maryland, the motorcycle operator, sustained life-threatening injuries when the motorcycle went off the road, down into a ditch, struck a steep embankment of a drainage ditch, and came to rest in a gravel area off the right side of the roadway.

Frederick County (MD) Fire & Rescue responded and began lifesaving techniques. Emergency Medical Services personnel transported Coblentz to Frederick Health Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

FCSO deputies made all appropriate next of kin notifications.

It appears the motorcycle was traveling southbound on Wi******er Boulevard, negotiating a left curve of the roadway when the motorcycle went off the road. Initial indications are speed and failing to stay on the roadway are factors in this crash. There was no evidence present indicating another vehicle being involved. FCSO Traffic Unit deputies will continue to investigate this crash.

As the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend approaches, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) offers the following tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday for everyone.

• If shopping in the early morning or nighttime hours, park near a light.
• Use caution while traveling through a parking lot. Pay attention to the pedestrians around you.
• If possible, hide your gifts in your trunk or cover with a blanket. Keep your goods out of sight.
• Shop with a family member or friend. There is always safety in numbers.
• Keep your wallet in your front pocket and if you wear a purse, always keep it on you.
• If you withdrawal cash from an ATM, ensure to protect your pin.
• Always lock your vehicle before walking away from it.
• If shopping with children, designate a central location to meet in case you separate.
• Do not pull out a large amount of cash and do not take your money out until you are ready to pay.
• Do not get into a verbal or physical altercation over an item.

Traditionally, package delivery thefts increase exponentially during the holiday shopping season. Consumers need to be aware when a package is scheduled for delivery and should ask neighbors to grab the package if they plan to be away. One additional tip includes providing instructions for the delivery service to place the package in a predetermined area with minimal line of sight from the roadway.

Additionally, this is one of the highest traveled weekends and more travelers means more chance for incidents. These tips should help in ensuring a safe trip.

• Check your car and make sure it is ready. Air in the tires, oil changed, lights checked.
• Keep a first aid kit, a flashlight, jumper cables, and emergency gear in your vehicle.
• Ensure you share all travel plans with family and/or friends.
• Follow the weather reports and plan your travel accordingly.
• Get plenty of rest before driving.
• Keep your seat belt on, follow rules of the road, and use caution in work zones.
• Have a designated driver and do not drive impaired.
• Put the cell phone down and avoid unnecessary distractions.
• Make stops along the way and if you are tired, stop and get some rest.
• If you experience any car issues, pull off to the side of the road as far as you can.

From Wednesday, Nov. 23, through Sunday, Nov. 27, 2022, Thanksgiving weekend 2022, FCSO deputies responded to more than 1,480 calls for service.

For 2023, deputies will be patrolling the county with a heavy emphasis on shopping areas and heavily traveled roads. If you need immediate assistance, call 911. If you have a non-emergency, call 301-600-2071.

11/18/2023

On Nov. 17, two Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) deputies responded to the 200 block of North Seton Avenue in Emmitsburg, Maryland, for a domestic in progress.

After further investigation, the deputies found probable cause that Joseph Anthony Ritz III, age 47, from Emmitsburg, a former town commissioner, had committed assault in the first-degree of his 13-year-old son. Visual marks were present on the child.

Emergency Medical Services personnel responded and examined the child. The mother of the child declined transportation for him.

The deputies arrested Ritz and transported him to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center for booking. Charges for Ritz include first- and second-degree assault.

On Nov. 13, 2023, Maryland Governor Wes Moore declared Nov. 13-17, as Crash Responder Safety Week.

Listen in as Deputy 1st Class Bryan Bittenmaster, from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit, talks about the importance of the Move Over Law and slowing down when approaching traffic incidents or disabled vehicles.

Thanks to our partners at Frederick County (MD) Fire & Rescue and MDOT SHA CHART for joining us in getting this extremely important message out.

As Frederick County is the fastest growing county in the state of Maryland, it is up to YOU to make sure you are staying safe as you travel through and in our county. Remember to move over when you can and if you can't, then slow down to a reasonable speed, remain vigilant to your surroundings, and keep those cell phones down.

On Nov. 16, a Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) detective, along with a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agent successfully arrested Brian Williams, age 37, of Middle River, Maryland, on three separate counts of s*xual solicitation of a minor, one count of third-degree s*x offense, and one count of displaying obscene material to a minor.

A part of the FCSO Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Section’s duty is to conduct online undercover investigations regarding the solicitation of minors through mobile applications, websites, and various other means facilitated by technology.

On Oct. 30, a FCSO detective received CyberTips that a 15-year-old female child (victim) was s*xually involved with an adult male, identified as Williams. Throughout the investigation, there were multiple messages of Williams soliciting the victim for s*x acts, exchanging explicit images, and having s*xual in*******se with the victim in Frederick County.

The detective and the HSI agent successfully interviewed Williams, in Anne Arundel County, and arrested him without incident.

Maryland State Police transported Williams to the Anne Arundel County Detention Center for booking.

“This is the second male ‘traveler’ within a week that we have removed from the streets,” said Lt. Andy Crone, FCSO Criminal Investigations Section commander. “These individuals will travel miles to perform these heinous crimes and our detectives will do whatever it takes to stop them. I am proud of the work our deputy and the HSI agent did to bring this suspect in.”

The FCSO ICAC section works in partnership with the Frederick County Cyber Crimes Task Force with a mission to investigate, apprehend, and prosecute internet s*xual predators who exploit children using the internet and technology, consistent with Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force standards and procedures.

Earlier today the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, along with our partners at Frederick Police Department conducted planned, unannounced K-9 searches at Linganore and Oakdale High Schools.

Specially trained K-9 teams were used to detect substances and/or items that are not permitted on school property. This proactive measure is another means to help ensure a safe environment for our schools.

The schools were placed into a Hold status during the time the K-9 teams completed their sweeps. During a Hold status, students and staff clear the hallways and remain in the room or area until the "All Clear" is announced. Business is conducted as usual.

We are happy to report nothing was found at either school.

Throughout the school year, our two agencies will continue to conduct these unannounced sweeps in our FCPS Maryland high schools.

UPDATE: Crestwood Middle School has been cleared and all students have safely returned to class.

Expect a very large police presence at Crestwood Middle School as we have received a bomb threat at the school.

All children have been safely evacuated as we investigate this call. Deputies are currently conducting a sweep of the school.

We would ask that all parents refrain from coming to the school at this time. We are working with our partners at FCPS Maryland to ensure every student is safe.

We will continue to update this post as more information comes out.

On Nov. 11, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office detectives successfully arrested Brian Brooks, age 43, of Stephens City, Virginia, on eight separate counts of s*xual solicitation of a minor.

A part of the FCSO Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Section’s duty is to conduct online undercover investigations regarding the solicitation of minors through mobile applications, websites, and various other means facilitated by technology.

On Oct. 11, 2023, a FCSO detective was performing online investigations posing as a minor female child, aged 14-years-old, when Brooks initiated communication with her through a cellular messaging application. The detective informed Brooks several times throughout the conversation that he was speaking with a 14-year-old female. Brooks continued to engage in a s*xual conversation, with the undercover detective, soliciting numerous s*x acts.

Brooks stated that he would travel from Virginia to Frederick County for the purposes of engaging in several s*xual acts.

Brooks drove to an agreed upon location in Frederick County and detectives immediately arrested him without incident.

Detectives transported Brooks to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center for booking.

“This male individual knew, without a doubt, that he was speaking to a 14-year-old girl and continued discussions with her in the hopes of having s*x with a minor,” said Lt. Andrew Crone, FCSO Criminal Investigations Section commander. “Our detective, who posed as this teenage girl, worked diligently to identify and apprehend Brooks without incident.”

As Halloween approaches, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office offers the following tips to make the night safe and enjoyable for everyone.

 Make sure that an adult/older responsible youth will be supervising children under age 12.
 Travel only in familiar areas and along an established route.
 Stop only at well-lit houses or apartment buildings and never enter a stranger's home.
 Establish a return time.
 Pin a slip of paper with the child's name, address, and phone number inside the costume, in case the child separates from the group.
 Costumes should be loose so warm clothes can be worn underneath.
 Costumes should not be so long that they are a tripping hazard.
 Make costumes with light colored materials. Use strips of retro-reflective tape for more visibility.
 Masks can obstruct a child's vision. Consider using facial makeup instead.
 If children wear masks, they should have nose and mouth openings and large eyeholes.
 Make knives, swords, and other accessories from cardboard or flexible materials.
 Carrying flashlights will help children see better and be seen more clearly.
 Walk - do not run - from house to house.
 Walk on sidewalks, not in the street. Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right, and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
 Put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
 Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
 Inspect all treats at home before a child eats anything. When in doubt, throw it out.

Additionally, all motorists should be extra vigilant for children darting in and out between parked cars and walking on roadways, medians, and curbs. Motorists are always encouraged to enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully, but during this Halloween week, the FCSO asks drivers to use extra caution.

If you have any questions, contact the FCSO at 301-600-1046 and ask to speak to a supervisor in patrol operations.
