Catarina Sobral donated three books to Henry Madden Library. They can now be read not only by Fresno State students and community but also by any member of the CSU library consortium! Muitíssimo obrigada, Catarina!!
Thank you also to the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures and to Camões I.P., represented by Dr. Duarte Pinheiro, for sponsoring this event, and to the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute for their support. Lastly, thank you to the Portuguese Language instructors, Diniz Borges and Dr. Inês Lima, the event's organizer.
Many thanks to Catarina Sobral for sharing her time with us! Students from the POR1A and POR 1B courses were able to ask lots of questions in Portuguese and in English and learn more about Catarina's creative process, inspiration and future projects! We've discussed how literature influences her art, how she uses images metaphorically, the three different types of languages within a picture book and how she uses scale and primary colors to create meaning. After the discussion, students did a creative writing activity where they had to use metaphors and images to describe their majors!
The Portuguese author, illustrator and graphic designer Catarina Sobral will conduct a workshop with Fresno State’s Portuguese Language students. The recipient of the International Award for Illustration (2014) has authored 13 picture books and illustrated 10 of them, published in different languages in several countries. She has also directed an animated short film and wrote and did the art direction of a stage play for children.
In this workshop, after a discussion of Sobral’s work process, the students will be able to write a story in Portuguese based on her illustrations. The event will take place on Monday, December 2 at HML 2132. This event is sponsored by Camões, I.P. and the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures, with support from the Portuguese Beyond Borders Institute. All are welcome to attend.
