Are fish in high mountain lakes of Sequoia National Park impacted by copper toxicity, and what are the potential links to valley agriculture? Kelly Martin (MS Biology student; Blumenshine lab) is addressing this question as part of a NPS team lead by Erik Meyer (MS Biology 2013) and collaborators at the Univ. of Missouri. Copper is an active ingredient in pesticides used in Central Valley agriculture. Copper can be transported in the atmosphere and deposited over Sierra Nevada mountain landscapes including pristine alpine lakes. The team is tracing copper from the Central Valley through the mountain lake water and food webs including algae, invertebrates, amphibians, and ultimately fish. Even small amounts of copper can have significant impacts on organisms in these lakes.
