While his health care coverage is not yet impacted by Texas Health and Human Services Commission's decision to exclude CCHP from the new STAR/CHIP contract starting in Sept. 2025, Zechariah’s story illustrates the important role CCHP plays in the lives of its members and their families.

Prevent Furniture Tip-Over Tragedies: How to Keep Your Child Safe 07/08/2024

Every year, hospital emergency rooms see thousands of injuries and dozens of deaths—the majority of which occur in children under six years old—from furniture tipping.

Though Cook Children’s hasn’t encountered a tipping-related fatality in many years, serious injuries persist.

“We've had liver lacerations, pancreatic lacerations, and broken bones as a result of furniture falling on kids,” said Cook Children’s Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator Sharon Evans.

According to Evans, dressers, bookshelves, and televisions are the top three culprits in tip-over cases. The majority of incidents involve climbing or the application of force, so if you know your child likes to climb or hang on furniture, their risk for harm is even higher.

Learn how you can prevent tip-over incidents:

Young artists from the community have brightened the halls of Cook Children’s Medical Center – Fort Worth with a collaborative art project, “Mandala of Compassion: A Tapestry of Unity.”

Each canvas of this breathtaking series encapsulates the essence of compassion through vibrant mandalas, or geometric configurations of symbols. Reflecting the diversity and interconnection of our community, the word "compassion" is beautifully inscribed on each canvas in one of the top six languages spoken by patients and families at Cook Children’s.

This beautiful artwork serves as a reminder that compassion knows no boundaries and is one of the greatest gifts we can give to others. This artwork inspires us to embrace empathy, kindness, and understanding in our interactions, fostering a culture of compassion that transcends language.

“It was a really fun collaborative art project,” Cook Children’s Resident Artist Sydney Peel said. “We reached out to different schools within our service area. I provided each campus with a canvas, the Cook Children’s color palette, the inspiration of ‘mandalas’ and the word ‘compassion’ in each of the top languages used by patients and families at Cook Children’s. Each school took that and ran with their own creativity!”

We’d like to give a huge thank you to our outstanding artists at each campus, Aledo High School/Daniel Ninth Grade Campus,Keller Central HS, All Saints' Episcopal School, Boswell High School, EMS ISD, Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts, and VR Eaton High School for your creativity and passion for art.

Zechariah is one of the more than 8,000 medically fragile children covered under Texas' STAR Kids program by Children's Health Plan. While his health care coverage is not yet impacted by Texas Health and Human Services Commission's decision, his story illustrates the important role Cook Children's Health Plan plays in the lives of its Members and their families.

DR PETE POST! (GRADUATION EDITION)

GRADUATION!
Congratulations to all you grads! I attended the ceremony at Trinity University where the main speaker was a doctor (woot!) that quoted Yoda, then Spiderman, then my favorite: “Don’t let schooling get in the way of your education” – by Mark Twain. This inspired me to share with you this repository of great wisdom: https://www.starwars.com/news/8-great-life-teachings-from-yoda

THE SKINNY ON RASHES!
Rashes!–this is the time of year where we once again receive lots of calls and visits about rashes, bug bites, and itchy/swollen red things. Not only are there more bugs, poison ivy and sunburns, but the rashes associated with illnesses are more common this time of year too–e.g. hand-foot-mouth, fifth disease, maybe a random viral rash from one of these throaty colds going around. Most of them are benign, self-limited viral illnesses. Some are more important, like the sore throat/fine-sandpaper-like rash that might be strep throat. These illness-caused rashes are not likely to benefit from creams or lotions, though any itching might be helped with an antihistamine, cooler baths and looser fitting clothes. The rashes themselves seem to get the attention and worry from everyone, and while the rash might provide a clue as to the cause, it really is not as important as how the child is doing overall. More important is do they have high fever, act too lethargic, not stay hydrated, or have respiratory symptoms? In the end, if your child has a rash, especially one with other symptoms (like fever, cold or throat symptoms), I would recommend a visit to help determine what is going on and how best to help it–but thankfully most of these examples are common illnesses without scary events or outcomes.

AND…MOVIES!
I realize my last review, The Dunes, was TLDR massive (but genius!), so back to short-and-sweet:

THE MINISTRY OF UNGENTLEMANLY WARFARE–The fact that this was (loosely) based on Operation Postmaster during WW2 redeems it a bit. The fact that Ian Fleming, who was actually involved in Operation Postmaster, based his James Bond novels (again, loosely) on the main character also makes it a bit more interesting. But for a Guy Richie film? ….MEH! Come on, man–inject some Lock, Stock banter or maybe some of that sweet sweet Sherlock style into this so-so film.

REBEL MOON PART 2–What’s even WORSE than Rebel Moon Part 1?! You guessed it! I really want these almost-3-hours of my life back. My wife just kinda had this on for background noise–and my stupid lizard brain made me sit down and watch. Verdict? Awful…just a slow-mo, steaming pile of garbage awful. PSA: DO NOT LISTEN TO YOUR LIZARD BRAIN; DO NOT WATCH THIS.

FALL GUY–About stunt men, directed by a stuntman, full of lots of–you guessed it–stunts? Dumb fun? PERFECT! This won’t win any awards, but Gosling is pretty amusing like he always is, and it’s a decent popcorn flick. RECOMMENDED! For those interested, this guy also directed John Wick, Deadpool 2, and my favorite Cold-War spy movie ever, Atomic Blonde.

WHAT’S BETTER THAN MEDIOCRE MOVIES REVIEWED? AWESOME VIDEO GAMES REVIEWED! I played some roguelike deck builders:

BALATRO–You really won’t believe it until you play it… that a single player game about poker can be this good, this addictive, this replayable. BUT IT IS! I gotta finish this write-up so I can get back to finding that perfect one-pair Joker build! 15 dollars well spent. Beware addictive personality types…they’re working on a mobile edition.

SLAY THE SPIRE–Decent variety based on the different starting characters and resulting builds. I found it a bit samey after a few wins, but really fun until then.

INSCRIPTION–My favorite of all. Great deck building game play within a mysterious/creepy world you have to figure out and an even creepier background real-world (sort-of) meta-connection to reveal? It’s really good if you’ve got the smarts. Or the game guide/wiki.

So to summarize: Rashes, movies, and video games. Sounds like Summer!

SPORTS PHYSICALS!
That time of year is upon us again, where all the athletes going into at least 7th grade (and all the high school marching band kids) need to arrange a pre-participation physical visit. All schools historically have taken a physical dated May 1st or after, some April 1st–you’ll have to check if your school is one that allows one from this month. Please get on the schedule before too long into the Summer because we get busy come July and especially August. If you feel like prepping or pep-talking them, the boys’ version does indeed include a private parts check for hernias, etc. The girls’ version does not. Some insurances are not covering simple sports physicals, so if you are due for a well check (if it’s been at least a year from the last one) then schedule the well check and we will just do the sports physical at the same time. We can help you confirm if the well check is covered; call if there are any doubts. Easy peasy.

TAXES!
….do em!
….before the 15th!

MOVIES!
THE DUNES! (Yes, both of them) (Short review): These movies are pretty. And cool. And great if you’re into long-form sci-fi. And from what I remember of those books decades ago, not too bad of a rendition. Did I mention long-form? They’re long. Really long.

THE DUNES! (Yes, both of them) (Long review):
What’s that you say? You don’t think you can get into a combined total of 321 epic minutes (2h 35m + 2h 46m) of interplanetary war and galactic political intrigue engineered secretly by a bitter old space-emperor? You don’t long for slow pans across beautiful desert landscapes, the backdrop for this huge tale of science-fiction-meets-sword-fighting-and-space-magic? (Uh wait…this sounds familiar). Are you all “This movie is too long” and “Like way too long” and “Who’s attacking them?” (All actual quotes from a Stellman)... BUT WAIT…. What if I recommended a movie in which a young W***y Wonka is new to the spicy confection business and gets weird prophecy-visions when he ingests certain spicy ingredients. W***y watches his family’s fates fall to betrayal from their oldest, most vile enemies and the sneaky machinations of Emperor Walken...betrayed all for the control of the culinary resources of the dessert planet Arrakis. W***y must flee into the wasteland, befriend the locals (NOT Oompa-Loompas, unfortunately), become their warleader, and by taking advantage of ancient prophecies lead them to rule over their own planet and destiny? And it culminates in a knife-fight-to-the-death between W***y (who has been combat-trained by Thanos, btw) and Elvis Presley?! I mean THAT story sounds AWESOME, right?! Some people like the old Dune movie with Sting and that Twin Peaks guy, but these are waaaaay better. They’re even funnier… for instance, what do you call it when {1st MOVIE SPOILER!} Aquaman gets relocated to a waterless desert planet and…uh… well… just guess what happens? Anyway.... I can’t wait for the third movie and I hope it’s even longer (yep this is a trilogy)…but I'm not sure "fear is the mind killer" as much as 3 hour long movies without bathroom break intermissions. Just remember: he who controls the chocolate factory controls the universe….

Help Your Child Prepare for Standardized Tests 03/06/2024

DR PETE POST! (MARCH 6)

TEST TAKING ANXIETY!

STAAAAAAAAR TESTS!
AAAAAAAAHHHH!!! Coming in April (yay!). While plenty of kids might not worry and just show up and do OK (or not OK?) without batting an eye, there are some families with perfectly capable kiddos dealing with significant test anxiety that affects their performance as well as maybe their mental state. There are quite a few “help” websites easily found with a simple google search, and there are some common themes to the advice:

**SCARY TEST MANAGEMENT BASICS**

–know what to expect (how many days of testing, what subjects, etc.)
–prepare for what you can improve on, address any weak spots if possible–something the teacher would be a good resource to seek out, and for which there are practice tests available
–practice some relaxation techniques if there is excess stress arising
–get a good night sleep, prepare any testing school supplies in advance, eat a good breakfast, leave enough time so there isn’t extra stress from rushing the morning of
–keep it positive, sneak a nice note or card in to their lunch, plan a celebratory dinner or fun night after the tests are done

HERE ARE A FEW ONLINE HELP SITES:

https://www.scholastic.com/parents/school-success/homework-help/study-skills-test-taking-tips/standardized-tests-prepare-and-interpret-results.html

https://tea.texas.gov/student-assessment/testing/staar/staar-released-test-questions

https://www.checkupnewsroom.com/a-pediatricians-tips-on-helping-your-child-with-anxiety/

CAN I OPT OUT? PLEASE?!

According to the Texas Education Agency, no law specifically allows parents to keep children from testing. There are examples of families writing letters and “opting out” for children’s mental health reasons (or personal/religious/etc objections) but without the testing it can end up coming down to a “can they advance” or even a “can they graduate” committee meeting. So beware that route.

AAAAAND…ONLY ONE MOVIE REVIEW!

(Sorry guys, but some of these quote-unquote “reviews” might have a bit of spoiler included. After some serious soul-searching and introspection I concluded that the jokes were totally worth it. Proceed at your own risk.)

DON'T WORRY DARLING. Yup…the movie that got MUCH more attention for Harry and Olivia’s off-screen romance and “Spitgate” than for any actual cinematic merits. Seriously, though– what's wrong with a bunch of dudes secret-pacting together to {SPOILER!} trick their wives into a virtual reality game?! I mean, I've been trying to convince Shannon to play Beat Saber for literally years…she NEEDS to see that my awesome, coordinated, slashy-slash-dance moves that are so truly impressive (in my own mind) are actually achieving a worthy, righteous purpose! You know…HIGH SCORES, MAN!? I don't even want to trick her permanently into any VR-Stepford-fantasy-world like those bozos did in the movie. *Sniff* I just want a Beat Saber partner….A partner to TOTALLY DOMINATE WITH MY TOIT MOVES!!!! Back to business: Recommend the movie? Naah. Not good enough; not even with the sweet 50’s cars (including a 1953 corvette convertible!).
