So many good things today! We lifted. We learned. We ate donuts. We PRd. We shouted. We lifted among friends. We made some new friends. As always, we’re so grateful for the support of the crew. Thank you for coming up to pass along conjugate training methods.
You know, as a kid, I wore a lot of clothes that were bought at thrift stores or were passed down to me from my older sister. Some of the furniture in my house my dad had built from scraps he’d found. He made beautiful things. One Christmas we watched my mom open a series of wrapped boxes, smaller in size than the last, that ended with an old, wooden box—a tea caddy, that he had refinished into a deep cherry color for her. He lined the inside of it in green velvet. Later, my grandma came to live with us, and I remember she made us biscuits the way she had learned to when she was a girl living in the Smoky Mountains, back when they reused the flour sacks for clothing if they needed it. My grandfather worked on to***co farms—he eventually pulled the family out of there—later serving in the Navy, then he was a union man, a Teamster. Eventually the family moved next door to people with money, doctors and such. All of that from what seemed like so little. My mother had Mensa reps coming for her, different colleges wanting her for her brilliance. She taught me how to make sausage gravy the old way like Mammow did, how to feed a family on a budget just as she’d learned. My family has showed me how to make something from nothing, how to build with what you have, how to tend, how to grow. I’m proud of coming from people like this.
I’m proud to find the use in something that is not new, and I’m proud of our gym. It is used, and it’s used hard. And I won’t be made to feel bad because what I have to give is not all brand new. We do this for free, no financial reward. We do it because we love it, plain and simple.

We don’t do the selling thing. I mean I don’t give pitches on gym tours, and I don’t make reels to entertain. I just love lifting, and we have a space for people who love lifting too.
If you’re into what we have, cool. If you’re not, also cool. Find your place. Get stronger.
The guys will be with us on June 15th, 11-2, for a seminar on the conjugate training method—the principles founded by Louie Simmons of Westside Barbell. Join us! Come to learn, stay to train.

Ahhhh would you just look at it? We love our new space.
There are differences between benching for gen fitness and benching for competition. In competition you want to limit the range of motion as much as you can while still working within the leverages that are most advantageous for your body. For some people that is going to be a massive back arch. For others it might be a super wide grip. Some have better leg drive with heels up, others while flat-footed. Benching is a skill that can take a lot of time and patience to master.
If you’re trying to test the upper limits of your strength threshold but don’t know where to begin, swing on by.

Thank you for this!
For the first 30 years of my life I was a runner, and I thought I only needed to lift upper body. I thought cardio alone would give me the power I needed to get faster, to be more explosive. Turns out adding squats to my routine cut my fastest mile time from 6:45 to 6:25 two decades later.
Get to squattin’.
So happy to have the guys from coming up to lead us in a Conjugate Training Methods seminar. They’ll cover basic principles and guide lifters through the big three.

Passing it along
Thank you for hosting some of us Gainesville Barbell members for a beginner Oly lifting workshop. It was challenging, humbling, and so much fun. My traps are sore.
Thank you to for taking these awesome shots.
I don’t miss much from my time in the Marines—I don’t miss being fu**ed with, the dumb s**t like raking sand in lines in common areas around the barracks in the Mojave Desert. I don’t miss the egos from people who advanced in rank through time but not competence. I don’t miss being a world apart from people I love.
But you know, I do miss my military friends. I miss all those mother fu***rs. I miss the closeness bound up with training together. And, I think a lot of other veterans might miss that type of connection too. To that end, on the first Saturday of each month we welcome veterans to train at Gainesville Barbell for free.
