Today, October 18th, 2023, is the Civic Media Center's 30th anniversary.
We are looking back at three decades of art, education, and radical organizing in the heart of the South.
To kick off the celebration, we are asking you to share your favorite CMC memories with us. Did you see a life-changing band or watch a mind-blowing documentary? Learn a new skill? Make a new friend? Read a good book?
No matter how long or short your experience with the CMC was, we want to hear about it! Please send your CMC story to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]), and tell us how the CMC made a difference in your life. We would also love to see photos, especially of older CMC events or old CMC locations.
We will re-share some of our favorites during the fundraising campaign in honor of our anniversary, and we may edit stories for clarity and length.
Please let us know if it is OK to re-share your story, and if we can include it in a future zine to celebrate the CMC at the end of the year.
And please help us spread the word! We're asking everyone who loves and values the CMC to consider donating $30 (or more!) as a special gift in honor of this momentous anniversary.
The support of our members and supporters here in the Gainesville area and around the world is what has kept the Center going for thirty years.
Contributions can be made via Paypal.me/cmc4ever or Venmo.com/cmc4ever.
Here's to another 30 years!
We have free masks at the CMC! Come pick some up during library hours: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays anytime from 2-6pm. Just please use the sign out sheet when you do, we want to keep track of how many we use. *Masks are reusable up to 40 hours / until they get dirty* :)
The CMC is having another volunteer retreat! If you volunteer at the CMC or your organization uses the space regularly, this event is for you! We’ll be having discussions about what it means to be a part of the CMC, planning next year and reflecting on the past 30, and some political education. Afterwards, we’ll have food catered in the courtyard. Feel free to bring desserts to share potluck-style!
The retreat will be on Saturday, September 23rd from 2-5pm. It’s kind of short notice this year because we wanted to squeeze it in before the chaos of October, while also ensuring we don’t host it on the Jewish High Holidays in September.
Masks required and provided inside

Dear friends, we'd like to ask for your help in raising some much-needed funding for the Gainesville Free Store.
If you'd like to support Free Store, please make a donation to the CMC via Paypal.me/cmc4ever or our Venmo.com/cmc4ever and note that the donation is for Free Store.
Free Store is an all-volunteer, grassroots group that gives away donated items from clothing to housewares to food and supplements, tools and toys on the 3rd Saturday of every month here at the CMC.
They're currently operating out of a storage unit that costs them $100/month, and are paying that expense either out of pocket or through bake sales and online fundraisers like this one.
A portion of each donation will also go to support the Center, which has been Gainesville Free Store's home since it was revived in the spring of 2018. Before that, Free Store was originally organized at Wild Iris Books (RIP) and was held regularly at MAMA's Club and the CMC, up through the winter of 2017.

On Wednesday 3/8 at 7pm the CMC Book Club will be meeting to discuss the article Let Them Eat Plague! by Dremel in Red Clarion. This essay is a broad overview of COVID’s effects as an airborne virus, the capitalist class’s response to it, and Friedrich Engels’ concept of social murder: the establishment of policies that place large numbers of people on the path to an early and unnatural death. Weather permitting, the meeting will be held outside in the CMC’s courtyard. Otherwise, we’ll be masked inside. The text is approximately 18 pages long.
Punk show coming up the 1st of March!!! Come and check out these bands right after our volunteer meeting! Thank you for putting this on! If you’d like to volunteer and help out with the show DM us!
On Wednesday 2/22 at 7pm, we’ll be continuing our discussion on gender politics with the essay Social Reproduction and Social Cognition: Theorizing (Trans)gender Identity Development in Community Context by Noah Zazanis from the book Transgender Marxism. It counters common essentialist conceptions of gender socialization by describing how our trans identities are formed through agentic, relational processes that we take an active part in. The meeting will be held in the CMC’s main space. Masks required. The text is 13 pages long. DM for a link to the pdf.
Join us for a discussion by journalist and RootsAction Education Fund’s cofounder Jeff Cohen!
