June is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health affects us and shows up in us all in different ways and it is important to know that men with mental health conditions do not seek treatment as often as women do.
A few more facts about mental health in men, according to MindWise Innovations, include:
- About 6 out of every 10 men experience at least one trauma in their lives.
- Men are almost two times more likely to binge drink than women, and are three times as likely to die as a consequence of alcohol abuse.
-In 2020, men died by su***de 3.88x more than women. Though men experience a higher rate of su***de, they are less likely to seek help and more prone to suffering in silence.
Save or share this post with someone you know or a loved one to encourage them to speak to a professional mental health provider and keep the conversation going on men's mental health.
Emily brings us another recommended read this week titled "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" by Robert T. Kiyosaki.
"Rich Dad, Poor Dad is the first book I ever read all the way through about financial wellness. It was written in a story format that captivated me and before I knew it, I finished it in less than a week. The book explains the difference in working for money vs. how to make your money work for you. It definitely makes you change the way you think about money."
The link between our gut and brain has been greatly researched and its findings show the impact that our diet and overall food intake can have on our mental health when it is being processed in our gut microbiome.
According to the National Library of Medicine, "gut microbiota has a role in developing anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression are gut–brain axis disorders that can be treated with the help of the gut microbiota, which offers a unique approach to modifying neurotransmitter regulation in the brain."
By modifying our diet and daily food choices, we can help treat symptoms of anxiety or depression that have been known to worsen with less healthy food choices like high-fat, fried, or carb heavy foods.
June is Men's Health and Mental Health Awareness Month.
Men are less likely to have received mental health treatment than women in a given year and highlighting the importance of men's mental health is essential to opening more doors to speak about mental health.
Certain mental health conditions can be equally common amongst both men and women but some of these conditions can be more common in men than women such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), suicidal tendencies, and anxiety.
Speaking to a mental health professional can greatly benefit your overall mental health, wellness, and lifestyle.

Today's book recommendation is presented by our office manager, Emily, who recommends the book "The New One Minute Manager" by Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson.
"I first read the One Minute Manager when I started working in management, and it was recommended to me by another manager. It highlights three specific steps managers should implement within their teams. It has been such a great resource for me as a manager and I review the principles often. I will always be grateful for that recommendation from a coworker and highly recommend it for anyone in a management role."
We are going to miss Becky, our long-time office manager at Sage Wellness. We wish her all the best on her endeavors and new chapter after Sage Wellness. The team thanks her for all her care, support, attention, kindness, and patience for all these years and for helping create a great experience for the team and our clients.
