June 19, 1865, known as Juneteenth, marks a pivotal moment in American history. This is the date when Union soldiers informed enslaved people in Galveston Bay, Texas, of their freedom, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, Juneteenth is celebrated as a commemoration of the history of slavery in the United States. We celebrate Juneteenth with the Black American community by recognizing the extraordinary Black women whose relentless pursuit of justice laid the groundwork for civil rights movements. Their resilience and strength continue to inspire us in the fight for freedom for all.
