DOOR International
DOOR International: Bringing God's Word and reproducing Christian fellowship to the Deaf of the world. Our mission is: Deaf reaching Deaf for Christ.
There are an estimated 70 million Deaf people worldwide, and less than 2% of them know Christ. DOOR International’s mission is to bring God’s Word and reproducing Christian fellowships to the Deaf of the world. Our calling is two-fold: translation and training.
--We help Deaf communities translate the Bible (and other resources) into their sign languages.
--We train and equip Deaf leaders in evangelism, discipleship, and church planting to reach their communities for Christ.
Seed Company's Pray for Zero guide recently featured our Kenyan Sign Language translation project and its impact on Pauline, a young Deaf Kenyan. Go to https://journal.prayforzero.com/books/hste/ =14 to watch her tell her story (a transcription is also included).
The first of several celebrations to witness what God has done over the past 40 years through DOOR International took place in Kenya last month. He is a God worthy of all praise! Join us in prayer throughout the month of September as we pray for more Deaf people to come to know Him. Go to doorinternational.org/pray for a printable version of this calendar.

DOOR, the world’s longest-standing international Deaf ministry organization, kicked off its 40th anniversary this month with a Deaf-led celebration in Kenya under the direction of Africa Director, Paul Njatha.
In the coming months, DOOR will host gatherings around the globe to commemorate this stretch of ministry—from its first inroads in 1983 to the worldwide networks of evangelism and discipleship that continues to multiply today.

Reaching Deaf for 40 Years and Counting For 40 years, DOOR International has been furthering Christian ministry among Deaf communities. DOOR kicked off its 40th anniversary
Our DOOR Africa campus celebrated 40 years in ministry at the beginning of August. Here is a sneak peek at that event. We will be sharing more from that celebration in the coming months, so keep an eye on this page, and praise God with us!
"Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life," skateboarder Rayssa Leal signed in Brazilian Sign Language when she was on camera at the Olympics. That video went viral among Deaf people on social media.
DOOR's Mark Sorenson sat down with Mission Network News to explain the significance of Leal's boldly sharing the gospel with the Deaf community, and how that bypassed the Olympics' media restrictions. Our first in-person celebration gathering is happening in Kenya early this month. Please pray for safe travels for everyone involved as we gather to bear witness to what God has done over the past 40 years among Deaf communities worldwide. God is working in Kenya! The Maua Deaf church just celebrated their anniversary. Years ago, DOOR's disciple-making teams went to the Njia school for the Deaf to teach God's Word to the students there. That ministry led to the planting of the Maua church! Praise God with us for His faithfulness.
Our friends at Deaf Missions created the first-ever full length feature film in ASL about the life of Jesus. We solidly believe that these words are true—that God's story is unstoppable in the heart language of a people group! Come support the release of this film in ASL so that more Deaf people can receive the gospel in their heart language. Get your tickets here at: https://www.jesusdeaffilm.com/
Keij Worro had no hope. Until he met DOOR's disciple-makers in South Sudan. This is the power of connection in Deaf lives like Worro's. The seeds of the gospel take root and produce fruit in a way they have never experienced before. Less than 2% of the world’s 70 million Deaf people know God.
To reach so many, DOOR International depends on God and works with partners to advance His Kingdom among the Deaf people groups of the world. Our partnership with MegaVoice Audio Bibles provided tablets preloaded with sign language Bible translation videos to several countries in Africa. This collaboration was recently featured by GACX in this video. Praise God for what He is doing on the field!

Some of DOOR International's staff members were able to attend the premiere of Jesus - a Deaf Missions film, a film about Jesus done in American Sign Language (ASL) with all Deaf actors, at the recent Missions conference. So many Deaf attendees were profoundly affected by finally seeing Jesus talking in their heart language on the big screen.
Mission Network News interviewed our own Rob Myers afterwards to get his thoughts on the movie. One question for our audience: how would Jesus be able to sign on the cross with his arms pinned down? Our 2023 Annual Impact Report is here!

This year, we are celebrating all of the fruit you have helped cultivate and looking forward to establishing work in new, unreached communities. Read more at: https://online.anyflip.com/ejek/rlob/mobile/index.html?blm_aid=0
Spring is in full swing, and we are eager to see God continue to work in unreached Deaf communities. Our prayers, offered up to Him, are like sweet-smelling incense (Psalm 141:2).
Please stand with us before the Father this month, offering up prayers on the behalf of the least of the least and anticipating His mighty hand at work. You are a vital part of this work!

He is risen indeed! Happy Easter from all of us at DOOR International.
John 3:16 says: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
Today, we remember Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and wait in anticipation for the joy that comes on Easter Sunday.
We're very excited about attending the April 4-7 Deaf Missions Conference in Arlington, Texas and seeing Jesus - a Deaf Missions film. Will you be there? If so, please stop by our booth and say hi to one of the many DOOR staff members who will be there! We would love to see you!

Isaac, a young Deaf man from Ghana, went to a hearing church with his family. Sometimes there was an interpreter for the services, but often there wasn’t one. Two other Deaf people went to the same church as Isaac, and they would all sit together and chat throughout the non-interpreted portions of the services.
While at school one day, one of Isaac’s friends told him about a Deaf church led by Deaf people. He became excited.
“When I went to the Deaf church, I was able to participate in the worship,” Isaac said. “For the first time, I felt a connection with God in church. I am so happy I found a place where Deaf people worship and teach God’s Word in sign language."
Today, Isaac is part of the worship team in the Deaf church! Read more of Isaac's story here: https://doorinternational.org/finally-connected-through-deaf-church
Spring is here! And with it comes a new prayer calendar.
This month, we want to remain close to the Lord as Easter Sunday approaches and remember the sacrifice of His Son to save us all. Bringing our prayer requests to Him is one way for us to keep a close relationship with Him. We are thankful for you standing alongside us in this journey.

We are delighted to welcome Julia Schmoyer to our team as our new Chief Human Resources Officer!
A few words from Julia: "I have watched DOOR's work with joy for over almost 20 years. Now that the opportunity to join the team has opened to me, I'm excited and humbled to add my hands to the amazing work God is doing through DOOR International!"
In Matthew 27, Jesus was brought before Pontius Pilate to receive judgment. Pilate gave the crowd a choice. They voted for coffee.
Wait, what? Coffee? In the Gospel of Matthew?
This did not happen in Matthew 27. Rather, the crowd screamed at the governor to crucify the innocent man standing before them. This is exactly why community checks are so important to sign language Bible translation work.
During a community checking session in Tanzania, the group was watching the translated passage of Matthew 27:11-26 in Tanzanian Sign Language (TSL). After the video wrapped up, one of the facilitators of the session asked the group what the people wanted Pilate to do with Jesus.
The group replied: “We’re not sure, but it looks like they need coffee.”
It turned out that the sign for “coffee” and the sign for “crucify” in TSL are pretty close! These Deaf people hadn’t been to church and knew nothing about the Bible. So they watched the passage and thought that the people were screaming for coffee instead of Jesus’ crucifixion.
This feedback from this group helped the TSL team revise their translation work to clearly communicate “crucify”, not “coffee”!

Prayer is one of the most powerful tools God has given us. It brings us closer to Him, and in prayer we can express our hearts to Him.
DOOR International is praying for the Deaf communities around the world to come to know Jesus and His love for them. Please join us in standing before the Father with this request and many others!

One Deaf church in Kenya had stopped eating apples because their pastor told them that it was a sin. The Fall was caused by an apple, right?
This was the situation encountered by a DOOR staff member when he visited this congregation. Read more about what happened and God's work among this people group on our blog at: https://doorinternational.org/the-sin-of-eating-an-apple
This is why DOOR International is so passionate about sign language Bible translation. If this church had access to the Bible in Kenyan Sign Language, they would have understood that it wasn’t the apple, but the action that was the sin.
They would also have known that the fruit that Adam and Eve ate in the garden of Eden was never identified as an apple, but simply referred to as “fruit.”
Today, we rejoice that portions of the Bible, including Genesis 3, have been translated into Kenyan Sign Language. Deaf people in Kenya now have access to the truth about the first sin, the fruit eaten in the garden, and much more!
DOOR International currently has many staff members traveling! Pray for safety and protection as each staff member is away from their homes and their families doing essential Kingdom work. Pray for God to be glorified through everything they do to reach Deaf communities.

Our Story
Less than 2% of the world’s 70 million Deaf people know God. Many Deaf never learned how to read, so the written Bible makes no sense. Deaf people need to see God’s Word in their heart sign language to truly understand it.
However, there are no complete Bibles in any of the world's 350+ sign languages. Deaf-friendly discipleship is even more rare.
We’re on a mission to change this. Will you join us?
