Are you following the devotional book, "Were You There? Lenten Reflections on the Spirituals" by Luke Powery?
This playlist linked below provides sample recordings of the songs studied in this Lenten devotional book which highlights an African American Spiritual for each of the 40 days of Lent.
Not every song listed in the book has an associated video recording in this playlist, as some songs are now uncommon.
Some songs have also evolved somewhat over the years, using lyrics that are standard now but had not yet been fixed when they were first written down 150 years ago.
Contact the office if you'd still like a copy of the book!

For Lent this year, Grace is offering a Lenten devotional book and discussion group on African-American Spirituals, titled "Were You There."
According to the publisher's description: "Valuable not only for their sublime musical expression, the African-American spirituals provide profound insights into the human condition and Christian life. Many spirituals focus on the climax of the Christian drama, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the ways in which those events bring about the liberation of God’s people.
"In these devotions for the season of Lent, Luke A. Powery leads the reader through the spirituals as they confront the mystery of Christ’s atoning death and victory over the grave. Each selection includes the lyrics of the spiritual, a reflection by the author on the spiritual’s meaning, a Scripture verse related to that meaning, and a brief prayer."
Pastor Kelsi will be preaching on some of these same texts through Lent. A discussion group will meet weekly during Lent, likely Sunday mornings at 10am. We’ll take turns leading each other in a review and discussion of each chapter over the coming months. Books are available in the office. RSVP to Steven Koster if you are interested in the group.

A healthy, urban, diverse expression of God’s new family in Christ Jesus.
“What does a church do with the Soldier’s Fund after the soldiers have come home? It buys an abandoned gas station, hires a truck driver and starts a Gospel Chapel. The truck driver, of course, loves preaching more than driving. The gas station would make a fine site for a chapel. And the God who makes wars to cease unto the ends of the earth has his eye on the corner of Sheldon and Buckley in Grand Rapids, Michigan.”
This is how Rev. Roger Van Harn describes the very beginning of what is now Grace Christian Reformed Church (in Fifty Years of Grace). Buckley Chapel, a mission of First CRC and Neland Avenue CRC, opened its doors in 1949. As the ministry grew, the people who attended the Chapel wanted to be more than a mission--they wanted to be a church. By the time they were officially organized in 1962 they’d been holding Vacation Bible Schools for 12 years, they had choirs, children’s classes on Sundays and weekdays, adult classes at the Chapel and in homes, they’d bought an organ, and they’d organized a Priscilla Circle and a Men’s Fellowship that each encouraged faithfulness and met the needs of the Chapel. They were the body of Christ to each other: a church.
Grace has always sought to love and serve with those God has brought us. We were a place of peace and safety during times of racial upheaval in the 1960s. While Grace is no longer majority African American, we maintain a commitment to matters of unity, justice, and reconciliation. People with a passion for social justice and urban ministry have always found a home here. Members of Grace were instrumental in starting the ministry that has become All Belong Center for Inclusive Education--and our adult Sunday school has recently returned to those roots, ensuring that all lessons are effective to those with a wide array of capabilities. Members with intellectual disabilities regularly minister to the congregation through dance and participation in liturgical plays. Grace was at the forefront for the denomination on the issue of women serving in all church offices, and they continue to do so, leading us as elders, deacons, pastors, and heads of committees and ministries.
Our diversity is not only racial and ethnic. We are young and old. We are economically diverse. Our levels of education differ significantly. Our cultural backgrounds are different.
