TALLER SOBRE SALUD MENTAL
Jueves, 27 de junio, 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

OVERCOMING HUNGER
In Akwangagwel, Uganda, the climate is very hot and dry. Farmers in this region depend heavily on the rainy season for a successful harvest. But lately—due to the changing climate—the rain has been coming later than it used to and is more inconsistent. Sometimes, when it does rain, it causes flooding and ruins the crops. Learn how Adolf and Florence have taken the matter into their own hands, implementing new farming techniques they learned from a Catholic Relief Services program to improve their farm and fight against hunger in their community. Visit crsricebowl.org to read this week’s Story of Hope.

A SEASON FOR REFLECTION

CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten faith-in-action program and it’s an opportunity for us to come together as a community and support our sisters and brothers around the world—especially people experiencing poverty, hunger and the effects of climate change.
This year, through CRS Rice Bowl, we will encounter communities in Uganda, El Salvador and Indonesia. We’ll learn about the principles of Catholic social teaching—and ways we can put them into action. Furthermore, participating in CRS Rice Bowl will help us engage daily with the spiritual pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
When you pick up your Rice Bowl, you’ll also receive a Lenten calendar that offers short reflections for each day of Lent. Make sure to put together this cardboard box and use it to collect your family’s alms. And visit crsricebowl.org for stories, meatless recipes, prayers and more to enrich your Lenten journey.

Our Story
Office hours are limited, but please call to set a time when staff can meet with you! The office is open 8:30 am-12 pm Mon//Wed/Thu/Fri and by appointment.
St. Mary Church was formed in 1857 as part of the Diocese of Detroit at the time. (The Diocese of Grand Rapids was established in 1882.) For many, the face of St. Mary’s is our landmark 1873 Gothic-revival church building, designed by the eminent architect Franz G. Himpler, and one of the oldest extant Catholic Churches in Grand Rapids. Not too long ago, the parish completed extensive repair and restoration work on the church building to ensure that it continues to support the work of the people in the years to come. The exquisite stained glass windows and beautiful interior create an inviting, holy space. Once a home for the German immigrants of Grand Rapids, St. Mary now serves a diverse population of English and Spanish-speaking Catholics.
Perhaps you are drawn to St. Mary’s by the beautiful building, the stained glass windows, its easily accessible location, or its rich history. We hope you’ll stay because of the welcoming community and opportunities to participate in the life of the parish. These church walls have heard prayers for over 145 years. Faith has been nourished and strengthened and handed on to the following generations. You are welcome to stop in to celebrate and serve with us!
