Did you know? Joe believed bats had only so many hits in them and when he went into a slump, Joe would discard the bat and get a new one. The only bat Joe did not discard was his original Black Betsy.
This baseball bat is made by Louisville Slugger to Joe's exact playing specifications. This model bat has not been made since Joe's playing days. The bat comes with the Louisville Slugger brand, along with Joe's trademark signature on the barrel of the bat. The bats are 36 inches long and weigh appx. 39 ounces (Joe's game bats where 36 inches long and weighed 38 and three quarter ounces). If you have ever wanted to own a game used Joe Jackson bat, but couldn't afford the $100,000.00 plus price tag, here's your chance! Did you know?
Joe got his nickname "Shoeless", which by the way he did not care for, when he was playing for the Greenville club in 1908. Joe had bought a new pair of spikes and they wore blisters on his feet. The next game the blisters hurt Joe's feet so bad that he took the spikes off and played in his stocking feet. Along about the seventh inning Joe hit a triple and was coming into third when some big guy in the stands stood up and hollered: "You shoeless sonofagun, you!" Although Joe played only one game without his spikes, he would forever be known as "Shoeless Joe".
Come find out more about Joe! The museum is open 10am to 2pm tomorrow, August 12.
We are excited to share that we have a new exhibit!

In the early 19th century textile mills started popping up around the Greenville area. By the time it was all said and done Greenville had 19 textile mills and became known as "The Textile Center of the World". The impact that textiles had in this area was the foundation of Greenville as we know it today. Joe Jackson started his storied and legendary baseball career at the age of 13 working and playing baseball with Brandon Mill. His textile baseball experience would eventually catapult him to the major leagues and the outstanding career he had. Joe always felt that the textile community stood by him even after he was banned from baseball. Because of this The Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum and Baseball Library has added a display of 18 mill community and mill related posters which we proudly have named The Greenville Textile Heritage Memorial Walkway. Please take a look at the posters included here and come by one Saturday from 10:00 to 2:00 and enjoy the Shoeless Joe Jackson experience.
