We’d like to explain the adjustment to this year’s annual paddle trip on the Saluda River scheduled for June 1st.
In 2017, we opened up an additional 6-mile paddle and portage option around the Piedmont Dam; on top of the initial 9-mile paddle from Dolly Cooper Park in Powdersville. This put a heavy strain on our Technical Rescue, First Responders, 3 Fire Departments, County staff, volunteers, and shuttle service trying to cover 15 miles of water way with approximately 300 paddlers. The shortened paddle this year will increase the experience with return shuttles to Dolly Cooper Park as well as emergency preparedness in the event of a response.
Additionally, whereas we provided a food truck for individual food sales in Piedmont in the past, we are relocating the food truck, “A Taste of Freedom”, a veteran-owned smash burger outfit to remain at Dolly Cooper Park throughout the day along with music DJ “Just Call Ben”.
Our goal is to centralize the core of the kayaking event at Dolly Cooper Park and improve the experience. This will also support the tubing opportunity between the two launches for day use on the river with personal floats. The take-out will be at the future riverfront park in Piedmont, north of the dam. The park is currently closed for public access while we refine design development and a Phase 1 scope of work. The site will be used to exit the river on the same ADA accessible kayak launch we have used in the past, and shuttles will pick up paddles and people the same.
The price of the event is the same as years past, and still remains a fundraiser for Special Olympics Area 14.
We apologize for any inconvenience but hope this will allow participants more time on the 9-mile section for fishing, drifting, and relaxing.
Ready....set....GO! Registration is open for the 14th Annual Saluda River Rally!

The Saluda River Rally is not only a fun, relaxing day on the river but is also a fundraiser for Area 14 Special Olympics for travel, uniforms and programs. For many years the BBQ lunch was donated by Randy & Angela Boggs at Saluda River Grill. Since their well-deserved retirement we had to purchase the meals that were provided as part of your registration. This has greatly reduced the amount of funds raised. We will not be providing lunch this year but will have a food truck available at the take-out in Piedmont for you to purchase from or you may bring your own lunch. With the support of Rally participants, almost $10,000 was donated to Special Olympics in 2019. We appreciate your understanding and hope this change can get us back to that number!
