As we celebrate this Memorial Day, let us not forget the reason why it is a Holiday. The Men and Women who have come before us and given everything for our Freedom and the life that we live are forever etched in our hearts and minds. To their families, we say, “thank you for giving your Sons, Daughters, Mothers, Fathers, Sisters, and Brothers so that we may never have to know Tyranny or Oppression”. So, when you see a Gold Star decal on a vehicle or flag flying from a house, say a silent prayer and thank them for what they have given.

Using techniques, terminology, and teams, members of A CO, 2 BN conducted practical Search and Rescue (SAR) exercises. These basic principles will help members understand their role when supporting both SCSG SAR teams and other agencies in our Area of Operations (AO). These skills will also be used during the 2 BN Capabilities Exercise (CAPEX) in May. The members of A CO will begin working on earning their SARTECH III certification over the next months.

Message from the Battalion Commander:

Troops of 2BN,

One hundred fifty years ago, in the middle of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln affirmed a national day of Thanksgiving. Though it was a time of austerity, Thanksgiving was a day for Americans to express gratitude for the many blessings they enjoyed, including the sacrifices of those serving in uniform and their families. Every year since, Americans have come together during this season to reflect and to give thanks.

As this special American holiday draws near, I want to extend my personal gratitude to the entire 2BN community for your work to serve our state. This year was a year that will go down in the books demonstrating the strength of the SC State Guard, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of you served many days and numerous hours. Whether you are deployed for missions within our state or drilling at the schools or our armory in Fountain Inn, it is your service and commitment that allows Americans and the citizens of SC to enjoy the blessings of Thanksgiving.

Your strength, selflessness, and patriotism are deeply respected by the people of South Carolina, and we are very thankful for your commitment to our beloved state.

I truly hope you and your families have a blessed Thanksgiving. Thank each one of you for your service. Always remember that our citizens will always be indebted to you for sacrificing on their behalf.
God Bless you all and God Bless the State of SC!

Great event at our BN Headquarters today. We are honored to have been able to participate in celebrating these and all Veterans on this Veteran’s Day. Even 2020 can’t overshadow their Loyalty, Dedication, and Commitment to our great Nation and our great State.

Trained and Ready!

Mountain Search and Rescue assets from the South Carolina State Guard (SCSG) were called into Oconee County today to assist in the search for a hiker who has been reported missing for several days. In the early morning hours, guardsmen traveled across the State of SC to convene and form two light, swift, and self-sufficient Mountain SAR teams. Their mission assignment was a waterborne insertion from Lake Jocassee into the deep reaches of the steep terrain of the Jocassee Gorges where they were to search 16 miles of mountainous trails. The team successfully located the missing hiker, alive, and transferred his care to the local emergency services. Credit for the successful rescue is attributed to all teams involved, including Oconee County Fire and Rescue, over the past several days and strong interagency coordination.

SCSG Team Leaders were PFC Matthew Hudson-Flege and CPL Steve Murph. The Officers in Charge were 1LT Christian Logan and First Sergeant Paul Herring.

This invisible enemy has created a challenge unlike any we have faced before. The Mad Dawgs and other troops from the Highland Battalion have been doing their part to help the citizens of the great state of South Carolina. As we progress through this global pandemic we will not be posting pictures until we are on the other side of this. We value the security of our troops but want everyone to know that the Mad Dawgs are involved and will remain involved. We want families and friends to know that every precaution is being taken to ensure your troops remain safe. I want to personally thank each Mad Dawg for stepping up and taking on these missions. You have elected to put your fellow man over your personal safety. Each one of you have demonstrated the army values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. Keep leading by example, keep being professionals, and keep showing why 2BN Highlands is the best unit in the South Carolina State Guard.
