Wildfire smoke 🔥, motor vehicles 🚗 and factories 🏭 all emit a type of air pollution called fine particulate matter. A study shared at suggests the risk of dementia diagnosis due to exposure to wildfire smoke was notably stronger — even with less exposure — than the risk due to the other sources of this type of air pollution.
In a large research study, reported for the first time at and partially funded by the Association, blood tests 🩸 did a better job of accurately detecting Alzheimer's than primary care doctors and specialists who were using traditional diagnostic methods.
The test was around 90% accurate in identifying Alzheimer’s in patients with cognitive symptoms at primary care and specialized memory care clinics compared to 63% and 73% accuracy when not using the test.
Why this is exciting: Highly accurate blood tests could drastically reduce the time it takes to get a diagnosis, as well as accelerate access to new treatments.
This week, more than 12,500 of the brightest minds in dementia science are convening in Philadelphia and online to share their latest research at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC). Follow our account for breaking news.
